About Thomas
In my experience as a classroom teacher, I have felt great success with encouraging my students to achieve self-expression through performance. Performing on an instrument is a truly intimate undertaking. Much like learning a language, the ability to express an idea takes great patience from the onset. I have worked with every level of performer in both large and small group settings, as well as individual lessons. I always meet students exactly "where they are" and build on their skill sets at a pace that encourages growth and expressive capacities. My students over the years have described me as passionate about music, consistent in my approach to teaching them, and positive in my ability to reinforce musical growth at any level.

I have played guitar since I was 10 years old, and have performed in jazz bands and combos, as a popular rock soloist, at coffee houses and open mics, and in the last five years have been teaching classical guitar in a classroom setting. I am fluent in music notation, music theory, as well as the various classical, jazz, and popular idioms with music education for the guitar, and for any instrument.
I approach guitar teaching with both visual and theoretical acumen. My students will learn theory through playing the guitar and will be able to apply that theory to their own music.
In a guitar lesson, I focus on a student's individual technique and assess/remedy/reinforce what is correct and offer guidance toward improvements. Some elements of guitar technique are absolute, whereas some leeway exists for players to develop their own technique, and I encourage both in my lessons.
I am happy to teach beginner students with no prior experience, novice students with some experience, and intermediate students who are looking for an advanced approach to the instrument.
