About Gary
I grew up in North America, spent 6 years in Asia: traveling, working, and studying. A long time ago, I graduated from UBC with a double major, plus a diploma in Teaching ESL. I spent 15 years in the field, plus many years in other fields, as well. As a language learner myself, I understand the frustrations that a language learner has to face. I speak and write intermediate Mandarin Chinese and Indonesian, and speak and write elementary French and beginner Spanish. I live in beautiful Vancouver, BC, which has a strong ESL industry.

I can teach any aspect of ESL: grammar, vocab, reading, writing, phonetics, conversation, comparison with a few other languages, and can explain the history of English and why it is weird and inconsistent. There is no typical plan, as the plan depends on what the student needs. I like to first focus on grammar and syntax overview because many students make the same common mistakes in writing, due to lack of clear understanding. I also like to go over prefixes, suffixes, and morphemes, as they are the building blocks of many words. One can often deduce an approximate meaning by disassembling the word. Likewise for a sentence. For readings, I like to use passages from popular age-appropriate novels and songs.
