About Isla
I’m a Chemistry tutor with over 4 years of experience and hold an MPhil in Chemistry. My teaching blends science with the humanities through a deep focus on the chemistry of art and cultural heritage preservation. I take a holistic and interdisciplinary approach, where chemistry meets creativity and conservation. My passion lies in exploring how pigments were made, how materials degrade over time, and how chemical treatments can help preserve priceless artworks. I often use historical art pieces as case studies to connect scientific theory with real-world applications. From pigment analysis to understanding varnish layers, I introduce students to the analytical techniques behind art conservation. I also emphasise the ethical dimensions of restoration—when to intervene, and how much is too much. Working closely with art history students, conservationists, and curious minds, I help bridge the gap between science and heritage. My lessons are rich with examples from ancient murals to modern paintings. Whether you're aiming for academic success or simply want to understand the science behind preserving human creativity, I’ll guide you with care and curiosity. My teaching approach in Chemistry is systematic, clear, and student-centred. I specialise in Organic Chemistry, particularly in areas like nomenclature, functional groups, isomerism, and reaction mechanisms. I break down complex structures into simple steps so students can understand them easily. Each session is designed to strengthen their foundation and gradually build up to advanced concepts like organic synthesis. I guide students through identifying functional groups, naming compounds, and understanding how reactions occur. We explore how electrons move in mechanisms and why certain pathways are favoured. As an Environmentalist and Marine Biologist, I also bring real-world context to the lessons, showing the role of organic compounds in ecosystems and marine life. Students receive consistent feedback, which helps them improve with every session. I encourage questions and make sure each doubt is cleared before moving forward. Learning with me is interactive and focused on long-term understanding. I use diagrams, flowcharts, and analogies to make lessons more visual and memorable. With my guidance, students not only understand organic chemistry—they excel in it.
