About Tom

Tom is a multi-disciplinary designer and is trained in Architecture from the UK. Since graduating from the University of Westminster he has been at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he is working as a Research and Business Manager within the Senseable City Lab with Professor Carlo Ratti. His current research is exploring the intersection of technology, people and physical space. He has also spent time working in Beijing, China with Buro Ole Scheeren and in London with Foster & Partners.

He graduated with distinction in a Master of Architecture in 2017 from the University of Westminster where his design thesis took an urban system approach that aimed to restore the Pallikaranai Wetland in Chennai, India, considered to be an ecological system, using algal blooms. The project researches how to design with and for material within the cyclical system of its birth, growth and death. Integral to this is the design and implementation of a series of instruments deployed in the Pallikaranai Marsh, which will transform it into a responsive landscape, healing itself over time. The design thesis has been published globally.

He has also spent time working in three practices: First, in Beijing working for Buro Ole Scheeren where he worked on a series of international competitions ranging from a headquarters in Berlin to an urban design proposal in the Olympic Park in London. Second, with Foster + Partners, where he worked with Narinder Sagoo to develop narratives by using different media to conceptualise early-stage proposals. While there, he helped design and develop the Droneport project based in Rwanda, Africa [Times Invention of The Year 2016]. Third, with GRUNER + FRIENDS to develop new tools using AI and Machine Learning to generate new proposals using various contextual parameters.

My teaching method varies on each class and the aims of the students. The overall method that I try to convey is enjoyment and engagement. You and I are both here to learn, and I feel strongly that learning should not be stressful. However, I will still push the students to achieve above and beyond, making radical proposals and decisions that can take them to the top of their respective field.

With my teaching experience at MIT and at the University of Westminster, I have taught various cultures and backgrounds, and levels of experience, and I am confident I can help you achieve your goals.

Find out more about Tom

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My fascination with the fusion of design, architecture, and data-driven urban planning began during my Bachelor of Architecture at the University of Central Lancashire. The realisation that data could inform and elevate the creative process sparked my interest in sharing this dynamic approach through private tutoring.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I specialise in the convergence of design, architecture, and data-driven urban planning. I thrive on exploring innovative approaches to urban design informed by data analytics, sustainable architecture, and the transformative power of thoughtful city planning. While I find every aspect of these subjects compelling, I'm particularly drawn to the challenges of integrating data-driven insights into the creative design process.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My inspiration stems from mentors who seamlessly blended artistic intuition with data-driven methodologies in architecture. Their ability to leverage data for informed design decisions has significantly influenced my teaching philosophy, emphasising the importance of marrying creativity with analytical precision.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

To be a good tutor, it's crucial to be approachable, friendly, and able to engage students in a level conversation. Patience and a genuine interest in the individuality of each student are key. Creating an environment where students feel motivated, confident, and comfortable expressing their ideas is just as important as imparting technical knowledge.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

During my Master's program, I collaborated on a project that utilised data analytics to inform urban design decisions. The integration of data-driven insights not only enhanced the project's sustainability but also underscored the transformative potential of blending creativity with quantitative analysis.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

An ongoing challenge for cities is striking the right balance between aesthetic aspirations and data-informed functionality. Successfully navigating this balance requires continuous adaptation to evolving technologies and methodologies in both the creative and analytical realms.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion lies in championing the synergy between data-driven methodologies and creative design. Teaching provides me with the platform to instill in students the understanding that data is not just a tool but a dynamic force that can elevate their architectural visions and urban planning strategies.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions)?

My unique blend of architectural expertise and a deep appreciation for data-driven insights sets me apart as a Superprof. I am committed to equipping students with the skills to seamlessly integrate data into their design processes, empowering them to become forward-thinking architects and urban planners in our increasingly data-centric world.
