I’ve spent more than 16 years specialising in one-to-one maths tuition and have taught hundreds of students. It is common for my GCSE students to improve by around two grades, whether that means moving from a 4 to a 6 or from a 7 to a 9. At A Level I regularly help students move from Bs to As and A*s.
My biggest GCSE turnaround was from a G to an A*. Another student started with me in the bottom set in Year 9 and went on to achieve an A* at A Level, finishing top of her school.
I also specialise in 11+, 13+ and scholarship preparation. One recent student received offers from all nine schools he applied to, including St Paul’s and Westminster 13+, and won the highest academic scholarship at King’s College School.
Over the years I have successfully prepared students for most of the leading UK schools, including Eton, Harrow, Westminster, St Paul’s Girls’ School, King’s, Sevenoaks, North London Collegiate and Godolphin & Latymer.
Earlier in my career, the Head of a London secondary school noticed the progress of the students I was teaching and asked me to build and lead its maths tuition programme. I recruited and trained 45 tutors, and the programme helped produce the strongest GCSE results in the school’s history.
I was later approached about taking on similar leadership roles elsewhere, but chose to make one-to-one tuition my career. It is the part of teaching I am best at and still the part I enjoy most.
I’m serious about getting results, but I’m not particularly schoolteacher-ish. Lessons are relaxed, there is usually plenty of humour, and I want students to feel comfortable enough to think, make mistakes and challenge themselves.
Underneath that, though, I am demanding. If I think someone is capable of a 9, I’m not going to quietly settle for a 7.

The goal is not to create a student who can do maths when I am sitting next to them. It is to create one who can do it without me.
To get there, my lessons start with three questions: where are we trying to get to, what is getting in the way, and how can we have some fun getting there?
I’m serious about getting results, but I don’t want lessons to feel like another hour of school. There is usually plenty of humour, and I want students to feel relaxed enough to think, make mistakes and challenge themselves.
The lessons can be relaxed, but I still expect a lot. If I think someone is capable of a 9, I’m not going to quietly settle for a 7.
The first job is working out what the problem really is. Two students getting the same grade can need completely different things. One may have gaps in their understanding, another may know the maths but make too many small errors, struggle under exam pressure or freeze when a question looks unfamiliar. Sometimes confidence itself has become part of the problem.
Once I understand what is holding a student back, we can work on the right thing rather than simply doing more maths.
Sometimes there is a genuine gap in understanding. A topic never quite made sense when it was first taught, so everything built on top of it has become shaky. Then I go back and fix the missing piece properly, often using analogies, diagrams or a completely different way of looking at the same idea.
Other students know far more than their results suggest. They rush, make small errors or do not notice when an answer has gone wrong. I might tell a student there is an error without saying where it is, so they have to find it themselves. Gradually they become much better at checking their own work and less dependent on someone else telling them whether they are right.
Problem solving is another big area. A student might know algebra, fractions, percentages and ratio perfectly well when the questions are labelled, but freeze as soon as nobody tells them which technique to use. We draw things, simplify the problem, try examples, work backwards, make a guess and see where it leads. I want students to become comfortable not knowing immediately what to do.
An important part of that is knowing when not to help.
If a student is genuinely thinking, trying ideas and getting things wrong, I will often leave them there longer than they expect. Trying something, discovering why it does not work, changing direction and eventually finding a way through is how strong problem solvers are made. If I step in too quickly, I take that experience away from them.
But there is a big difference between productive struggle and a student who feels genuinely lost, anxious or embarrassed. I am very sensitive to that distinction. Sometimes the right thing is to push. Sometimes it is to slow down, remove the pressure and give them the space to start thinking clearly again.
One-to-one tuition also means we can move quickly. If a student understands something, we move on. If something important has not clicked, we stay with it until it does. We are not tied to the pace of a classroom.
Ultimately, I want students to become more confident, more independent and better at working things out for themselves. The best result is not just a better grade, but a student who increasingly knows what to do when they get stuck.

Our daughter used to really dread maths and it was becoming a bit of an issue at home. She would get anxious about getting things wrong and often just didn’t want to try. Matt was brilliant with her. Quite quickly she became much calmer about it and started having a go at things she would previously have avoided. She enjoys the lessons and is doing really well now. It’s been a huge change for her
My daughter was always good in maths lessons but when she had test alone it was different. She was not sure of herself and made mistakes in things that normally she could do. This was something we worried about a lot.
Matt helped her to trust herself more. After some time we could see a big difference especially in tests. She stopped changing answers so much and was not getting stuck because she was unsure. Her results became much more consistent and this was very important for usWe found Matt quite late in the run up to GCSEs and honestly I think what we liked most was how quickly he understood what needed doing. There wasn’t loads of time so he focused on the things that would actually make a difference rather than trying to cover everything. Our son was really quite stressed before we got tuition but we noticed him shift quite quickly into a much more focused approach which surprised us and we were really happy with. My son really liked Matt too. We were very pleased we found him when we did
I've got my GCSEs this year and Matt has been my tutor for two years. To be honest maths isn't one of my favourite subjects but it's important to me that I get a good result. Matt's helped me get a lot better and I really enjoy the lessons with him. He explains things so I get them and he's funny
Maths at school had become a real battle for my daughter. She has ADHD and if she doesn’t understand something fairly quickly she can switch off completely. Matt somehow got past that. He worked out very quickly when she needed things explained differently. When to leave something and come back to it. And when she could actually be pushed quite a bit harder than she thought. She liked him which helped enormously but she also trusted him when he told her she was capable of doing something. We saw a big change in both her confidence and her maths. I think what I appreciated most was that he never treated her as difficult. He just found a way of teaching her that worked.
My son was really struggling with maths when he started with Matt and had lost a lot of confidence. Over time things just started to click. He went from feeling like maths was something he wasn’t good at to actually believing he could do it, and his grades started going up as well. By GCSE he was working at a level we honestly wouldn’t have expected when they first started together. Matt was patient with him, knew when to push and my son genuinely enjoyed the lessons. It made a huge difference
Matt helped my daughter prepare for the London Consortium exams and was excellent throughout. She had been struggling with a few areas in maths and he really helped her turn a corner with them. She became much more confident and the whole process went extremely well. We were delighted with the outcome.
My daughter really liked working with him and always spoke very positively about the lessons. I’ve since recommended Matt to a few friends and other families I know.Matt is great, super helpful and a really clever guy. My son made big improvements with him and got much more confident in maths. He explains things really well and always knows how to get him unstuck. would definitely recommend
Matt helped my son prepare for entry to Harrow and was a great support throughout the process. We were delighted when he was offered a place. We later went back to Matt for some GCSE Maths lessons during the holidays and he helped move him from an 8 to a 9. We have always found him reliable, encouraging and very good with our son
Matt has helped me a lot to improve my mathematical skills and understanding on difficult topics as well as advancing me through the GCSE Maths and Further maths course
matt has helped my daughter with maths from year 8 all the way to her iGCSE. she improved a lot over this time and became much more confident, and finally got an 8 which we were very happy with. she always enjoyed the lessons with matt and he was very good at explaining things when she was stuck. very happy to recommend him.
Matthew tutored my son Harry for A Level Maths and also helped him prepare for the SATs when he was applying to universities in the US.
He was very good at keeping Harry on track, which was probably one of the things we needed most. Harry is bright, but like lots of boys that age he could sometimes leave things rather late. Matthew was organised, kept an eye on what needed doing and made sure they covered everything without making Harry feel as though he was being constantly chased.
Harry really liked him too, which made a huge difference.
He went on to get an A* in Maths and was accepted to Princeton. We were obviously thrilled, and Matthew had been a real help throughout that whole period.
I also always appreciated how straightforward and honest he was. A couple of times I managed to overpay him and each time Matthew immediately pointed it out. He could very easily have said nothing. I remember thinking at the time that it told me quite a lot about him.
He is reliable, very good with young people and takes what he does seriously, but without being overly serious himself. Harry enjoyed his lessons and, more importantly, listened to him.
I would recommend Matthew very highly.Matt helped my son a lot when we moved to the UK from Ukraine and he needed to adapt to the British school system. At first maths was quite different for him and he needed time to understand what was expected, especially for 13+ exams.
With Matt he made very big improvement in maths and became much more confident. He was accepted to Westminster School at 13+ which we were extremely happy about.
My son always enjoyed lessons with Matt because he makes maths fun and they could joke together, but at the same time he learned a lot. He really looked up to Matt and was always happy to have his lesson. We are very grateful for all his help.Matt helped my son with his maths for over two years during the Middle School. His gentle approach gave my son the confidence he needed at school and continuous encouragement was the best approach to my son’s learning process. Matt was always very helpful with certain topics that needed more attention as well as helping our son with homework assignments that he struggled with.
Matthew has taught both of my children Maths for nine years (from 11+ preparation through to A Level), and I genuinely cannot recommend him highly enough. He adapts his teaching style, giving encouragement and reassurance to one while stretching and challenging the other.
His explanations are a real gift, as he finds many ways to explain a concept until it clicks. He is patient, warm and fun to learn with. He keeps track of their progress and deliberately circles back to topics covered months earlier, so nothing is forgotten.
The results speak for themselves. One of my children has gone on to win Gold awards in Maths Olympiads, and the other performed brilliantly in her GCSEs.
Matthew is a tutor who will get results while making your child actually enjoy the subject.Matthew has been a tutor with my family for over a decade and i can confidently say he is the best maths tutor in England. He is extremely gifted at teaching, especially when you struggle with maths and feel as though you will never understand it. He will also greatly boost your skills if maths is one of your stronger subjects. Aside from maths he is extremely kind and funny and will make any math lesson enjoyable and less daunting. I couldn’t recommend him more!
Matthew has worked with our daughter from year 8 - 11 in maths and subsequently further maths for GCSE’s. Matthew was very thorough and extremely conscientious. He is not only a great teacher but he gave our daughter the reassurance and the confidence to achieve her goal. We are thrilled with the results. Our daughter will now take maths and further maths A levels.
