About Osama

I published my first novel at the age of 17 and completed my undergraduate degree in Accounting and Finance at the University of Hong Kong. I also did an exchange semester in Economics in Rome and have traveled to 40+ countries. My passion for teaching started early, as I began tutoring my classmates in math, physics, and chemistry while I was in grade 10. This evolved into tutoring multiple students in Hong Kong and later in California, where I continued teaching these subjects along with English to groups of 3-7 students at a time.

I teach MATH, English, Chemistry and Physics to middle school through college including everything SAT. I also teach accounting and economics. Math: Pre-algebra, algebra 1 & 2, pre-calculus, calculus, geometry, trigonometry, college trignometry and SAT Math. English: Reading, writing, vocabulary, creative writing, syntax, grammar, literature, advanced writing, speaking and SAT/ACT English. PreK-level 12 Physics and Chemistry. Intro to Micro+Macro Economics Financial accounting and managerial accounting.

I profess the art of explaining and dissecting concepts on a granular level so everything becomes 2+2 for my students. When everything from kinematics to organic chemistry feels like 2+2 to my students, they can perform well even in stressful environments like examinations and, more importantly, these concepts stick for longer (even for life!).

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in teaching started quite early. When I was in 10th grade, I began helping classmates with maths, physics, and chemistry. What started as informal help quickly turned into regular tutoring sessions with groups of students. I realized that I genuinely enjoyed breaking down difficult ideas and helping people understand concepts that previously felt impossible to them.

Over time this became something I pursued more seriously. While studying Accounting and Finance at the University of Hong Kong, I continued tutoring students privately. Since then, I have taught students in multiple countries and education systems, including Hong Kong, California, and now the United States.

Today I tutor Mathematics, SAT preparation, and driving theory, and what keeps me motivated is seeing students go from confusion to confidence.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I primarily teach mathematics and SAT math, and I also help students prepare for driver knowledge tests.

What I enjoy most about mathematics is that it is fundamentally about patterns and logic. Many students think math is about memorizing formulas, but I try to show them that it is really about understanding why something works.

Some of my favorite topics to teach are:

    Algebra and expressions
    Problem solving and logical reasoning
    Geometry and visualization
    SAT quantitative reasoning
I particularly enjoy working through challenging problems step by step, because that is where students often have the biggest breakthroughs.

If there is one area students tend to struggle with the most, it is when math is taught purely as memorization. My goal is to turn those moments into conceptual understanding.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I was fortunate to have several teachers who emphasized clarity of thought rather than memorization. The ones who inspired me the most were those who could take something complicated and explain it in a very simple way.

That ability—to simplify complex ideas without losing their depth—is something I try to bring into my own teaching.

Outside the classroom, I’ve also been inspired by mathematicians and educators who treat math as a way of thinking about the world, not just a school subject.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor needs more than subject knowledge.

    The most important qualities are:

Clarity – being able to explain ideas in multiple ways.

Patience – every student learns at a different pace.

Structure – good lessons follow a clear progression.

Adaptability – teaching must be tailored to each student.

For me, the key skill is breaking complex ideas down into very simple building blocks. Once a student truly understands the foundation, everything else becomes much easier.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One moment that always stayed with me happened when I was tutoring a student who was convinced they were “bad at math.” They struggled with algebra and had almost given up.

Instead of rushing through formulas, we spent time understanding why equations behave the way they do. Suddenly, something clicked for them.

A few weeks later, that same student solved a difficult problem on their own and said, “I didn’t memorize it this time — I actually understood it.”

That moment perfectly captures why I enjoy teaching.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

One challenge in mathematics education is that many students are taught to memorize procedures without understanding the reasoning behind them.

This can make the subject feel intimidating or mechanical.

My goal as a tutor is to reverse that process. Instead of starting with formulas, I start with concepts, then show how formulas naturally emerge from those ideas.

When students see the logic behind mathematics, the subject becomes far less intimidating.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Teaching itself is definitely a passion for me.

I enjoy the process of guiding someone from confusion to clarity. It’s incredibly rewarding to watch students gain confidence in subjects they once found difficult.

Beyond teaching, I also enjoy writing and explaining ideas clearly. In fact, I wrote and published a novel when I was 17, which reflects my interest in communicating ideas through storytelling as well.

Both writing and teaching involve the same core skill: making complex ideas understandable.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

I think what sets me apart is my ability to simplify complex concepts in a very structured way.

My lessons are designed to help students build deep understanding, not just short-term exam preparation. I focus on identifying where a student’s confusion begins and rebuilding the concept from that point.

I’ve worked with students across different levels and backgrounds, and many of them come in thinking they are “not good at math.” Watching them develop confidence and independence in problem-solving is what makes tutoring so rewarding for me.

For me, being a Superprof simply means being fully committed to helping students think clearly, learn deeply, and succeed.
