About Abraham

I am currently tutoring students who are learning math at the Grade 4 to 12 level who want to build or increase their confidence and expertise in math. I have a passion for helping students who are having challenges with math: I want to see them succeed! My goal is to help them understand and feel more comfortable with mathematical concepts, and I use several different teaching methodologies and structured lessons with a relaxed approach to accomplish that. I have a B.Sc. in Computer Science and a B.Ed. in Secondary School Education from The University of British Columbia. One of my favorite courses at UBC was a third-year math course on number theory. Finally, I enjoy all areas of math, with algebra being my most favorite.

Building Confidence in Math, One Lesson at a Time!

The way I tutor includes, but is certainly not limited to, using different visual aids, making math relevant and meaningful, giving practice exercises, and preparing lessons according to how students learn best and what their most important needs are. I am patient and good at explaining concepts clearly. My lessons are intended for students learning math at the Grade 4 to 12 level who want to feel more confident and empowered in math. Although I am focused on tutoring in the Tri-Cities (Port Moody, Coquitlam, and Port Coquitlam), I can tutor almost anywhere in the Greater Vancouver area.

Base rate is $45/hour for all ages and for all grade levels that I tutor.

Travel costs may apply if I need to travel to an area outside the Tri-Cities region (i.e., if the tutoring location is more than 15 km away from my home).

Your first meeting with me is a free know-your-client consultation. It is an optional, no-obligation meeting where we can learn more about each other, what our expectations are for each other, details on how my tutoring service will work, etc. This meeting takes approximately one hour but can vary widely depending on the client.

  • When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

From an early age, I have always loved math and have always been good at math. Math has always been fun for me. For instance, there are interesting properties for different expressions, operations, numbers, etc., and different mathematical concepts can be used to solve a particular problem, kind of like how everything fits together in a jigsaw puzzle. Also, I always knew that math had many relevant real-life applications.
  • What makes you passionate about your subject?

I love working with numbers, seeing various mathematical patterns, seeing how some relatively complex equations or expressions can be neatly reduced to something relatively simple, etc. Furthermore, math is used everywhere, everything from the most complex calculations in a research lab to something as simple as figuring out the total spent on junk food at the grocery store. Math touches almost every aspect of society, of our daily lives.
  • What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

I love seeing the look on a student's face when they get that "Aha!" moment, when they finally understand a math concept that seemed like a foreign language to them just minutes ago. I want students to achieve their potential, and I enjoy sharing my knowledge with them. With many students struggling with even the most basic mathematical concepts in an increasingly competitive world, I decided to invest as much time as possible in helping students who are having difficulty with math. And that's what makes me a "Superprof": among many other things I do for my students, I use different teaching techniques and methodologies, even with the same topic, since different students learn and understand math in different ways. Just as there are often many different ways to get the correct answer to a math question, there are also often different ways to teach the same math topic.
  • Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I had the same math teacher in my senior high school years. Among many other great qualities, he was very patient, explained things well, and was very encouraging: these are qualities I utilize in my own tutoring sessions. He is one of my best role models and is also one of my most favorite teachers.
  • What are your keys to success?

Work hard, work smart, persevere, be patient, stay focused, and learn from failure. Or to put all this another way, more or less: have the discipline to do what you know you should do, even if you don't feel like to do it. (Failure will not prevent you from succeeding, but being lazy will.)
