Isabelle plans each lesson with pre-prepared notes, questions and exam papers at a variety of levels, adapting according to student performance. For each topic, Isabelle moves from open-book, collaborative questions, to independent work, and finally to exam condition questions. This approach helped Lisi, a current student, answer timed questions, improving his results. In 16 months, he has gone from lagging behind, to outperforming his peers by 6 months.

With new students, Isabelle helps colour-code a syllabus to refer to for targeting weak areas. When a topic is covered, the syllabus is updated and used to plan future goals. Topics are re-visited in mock exams and as warm-ups to sessions so that they aren’t forgotten. Isabelle writes progress reports after every session, to share with parents.

Isabelle provides a professional experience, clearly communicating student progress, timetables, and policies.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I'd always been interested in Maths but that interest really took off around GCSE level. Around that time I also started tutoring through a mentorship scheme set up at school, and I found that I really enjoyed it. I got more into tutoring around January 2020, and found I was able to help students and their families stay connected to their educations over lockdown. Since then, I have worked with 11 different pupils and provided over 50 hours of tutoring sessions!
  • Tell us more about the subjects you teach - what are your favourite areas to discuss with students?

A favourite area of mine to discuss with students is Cryptography, as Simon Singh's 'The Code Book' inspired a genuine love of the evolution of Cryptography. For example, did you know that cryptography is partially responsible for Queen Elizabeth's execution of Mary Queen of Scots? In fact, I found his book so interesting that I based my university personal statement on it! If you've never read it, it can be a little difficult to digest, but if you take it slowly and read a little bit at a time it's definitely worth it!
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I think that the most important quality when tutoring is patience. Being patient keeps the sessions relaxed for both the student and the tutor, and creates an environment in which the student feels comfortable learning and exploring gaps in their knowledge. This makes the whole experience more enjoyable for everyone involved, plus it's much easier for a student to learn if they know they don't need to worry if they make a mistake!
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching or something completely different?

I'd say that a key passion of mine is learning. Whether it's academic learning, watching science or nature documentaries, or teaching myself creative skills, I love giving my brain a challenge! I think my own love of learning is probably part of the reason why I find helping other people learn to be such a rewarding experience.
  • Any last advice?

I'm very aware that although Maths can be an extremely enjoyable subject, there are still lots and lots of students who dislike it or struggle with it. Importantly though, I also believe that with the right support anyone can improve their Mathematical confidence and skill. My advice to any student would be to keep going, and to keep looking for help until you find the right support for you.
