About Fikile

I am an isiZulu teacher at a private school. I enjoy seeing my students move from not knowing where to begin to being excited and proud as they master the basic concepts of language formation. I also provide tools that are easy to use to help my learners track their progress at different stages of the course. I have taught in secondary schools and tertiary institutions; however, I have enjoyed teaching at a primary school level in recent years.

In my lessons I use a participatory method which is learner centred rather than teacher centred. I encourage my students to actively participate in the lesson so that they can gauge for themselves which concepts they have grasped and how to build their vocabulary from everyday encounters.

I use a variety of learning options to improve my students language abilities.
You learn the basic concepts of isiZulu language, including phonics and pronunciation. Also learn everyday greetings and nuances that are not always obvious to non speakers of the language. Language carries the culture of the people, so you will also get a change of learning about the culture of the Zulu people, during the lesson. Students learn technical skills like the difference between the letter names and the letter sounds, the formation of complex syllable words using consonants and vowels.

  • 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn it?

    1. Because of my origins.
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

    2. Shaka Zulu.
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

    3. Yebo, Sawubona.
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

    4. isiZulu is one of South Africa's 11 official languages and the most widely spoken home language in the country.

It connects people to their heritage, traditions, and ancestral wisdom.

It affirms identity and builds pride, especially among Zulu-speaking communities.
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language, and what can help students with the learning process?

    5. The sentence structure in IsiZulu is unique, different from English but somewhat similar to French.
  • 6) Could you share an anecdote related to your language learning or your student days?

    6. "Yebo, Gogo" - The Day Lena Became Family

Lena, a volunteer from Germany, arrived in rural KwaZulu-Natal eager to help at a local preschool. She had studied a few basic isiZulu phrases before coming, but nothing could prepare her for the rhythm and richness of the language spoken around her.

Every morning, she would greet the children with a cheerful, "Sawubona!" and they would giggle, replying in unison, "Yebo, Teacher Lena!" But it was her interaction with one of the grandmothers-Gogo Nomvula, the school cook-that changed everything.

One day, Gogo asked Lena in isiZulu, "Ufuna ukudla ini?" (What would you like to eat?) Lena panicked for a second, then smiled and said slowly, "Ngifuna amasi… no-u-uhh…uphuthu?" Everyone burst into laughter-not mocking, but delighted. Gogo hugged her tightly and said, "Hawu! Manje usungumZulu!" ("Now you are a Zulu!")

From then on, Gogo called her "ndodakazi yami" (my daughter), and the children proudly became her little tutors. Each mistake became a lesson; each effort, a bond. Lena didn't just learn isiZulu-she became part of a community, all because she dared to try.
  • 7) How has travel or a specific experience helped you to increase your understanding and appreciation of the language?

    7. When you travel to areas where isiZulu is spoken (like KwaZulu-Natal or parts of Gauteng and Mpumalanga), you begin to see the language in action:

    In greetings like "Sawubona!" (Hello)

In marketplaces, churches, homesteads, and taxis

    In songs, dances, and storytelling

This cultural exposure deepens appreciation for isiZulu not just as a language, but as a living, breathing expression of a people's identity.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof?

    8. It is my passion for education, the love for community and the courage to stay on.
