About Silas

In my lessons, I show how mathematics is deeply connected to the digital world we live in. We explore how math forms the backbone of technology, from the logic behind coding to the algorithms that power modern applications. My relaxed and application-focused approach makes complex ideas easier to understand and more exciting to explore. We’ll look at discrete mathematics for computer science, the foundations of computational processes, and how these concepts apply in real-world digital systems. I often use programming analogies to make abstract topics relatable, helping you see the direct link between mathematical thinking and problem-solving in tech. Interactive exercises will give you hands-on experience, making the learning process both practical and engaging. I guide learners to confidently articulate computational problems, break them down into smaller steps, and approach them with clarity. Whether you’re creating game logic, designing systems, or developing digital tools, you’ll see how math shapes the process from start to finish. My aim is to help you see math not as a set of rules, but as a vital digital skill you can use creatively and effectively. Together, we’ll bridge the gap between theory and application, turning concepts into tools you can actually use. Let’s code your way to mathematical mastery and unlock new possibilities in the digital world.

I’m a Maths tutor with over 7 years of experience and a MSc in Computational Mathematics, passionate about making mathematics approachable for everyone—especially non-STEM learners. My teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that math is not just about numbers or equations, but about ideas, patterns, and the way they shape the world around us. I take a holistic approach, guiding students to see the beauty and relevance of advanced concepts without getting lost in endless computations.

Instead of overwhelming learners with formulas, I focus on building a strong conceptual foundation. I use everyday analogies—like comparing algebraic structures to language grammar or trigonometric cycles to music rhythms—to make abstract concepts relatable. Historical context plays a big role in my lessons, showing how great thinkers and pivotal discoveries shaped the mathematics we know today.

I’ve worked extensively with liberal arts students, humanities scholars, and learners who once believed math “wasn’t for them.” Many have come to me with math anxiety rooted in past experiences, and together, we’ve replaced fear with curiosity and confidence. I believe that when you understand the why behind the theory, the how becomes much easier.

In my sessions, we discuss the big ideas behind topics—whether it’s the symmetry in algebra, the geometry in nature, or the philosophical questions in probability. I want students to see that mathematics is a living subject, woven into art, history, music, and everyday life. It’s about learning to think in new ways, not just solving problems.
