About Janet

Hi! I'm Janet, and I grew up in Hong Kong speaking Cantonese. Mandarin became my second language through school and daily life, so I understand both the challenges and the excitement of learning a new language from personal experience.

As my interest in Mandarin grew, I found myself becoming just as interested in how people learn languages. I was always curious about how to express ideas more naturally, how native speakers would say the same thing, and what makes a conversation sound truly authentic. That curiosity eventually inspired me to become a language teacher.

Today, I teach both Mandarin and Cantonese because I genuinely enjoy helping people connect with others through language. Whether your goal is travelling, communicating with family, advancing your career, or simply learning for the joy of it, I'd love to be part of your journey.

I believe the best language learning happens when students feel supported, stay curious, and aren't afraid of making mistakes. My goal isn't simply to teach vocabulary or grammar, but to help students build the confidence to communicate in real-life situations.

One of my favourite moments as a teacher is seeing students use the language outside the classroom—whether it's ordering a coffee, chatting with family, travelling independently, or suddenly realising they can understand a conversation that once seemed impossible.

  • 1) Did you grow up speaking this language? Or were you inspired by a trip abroad, an individual or a certain aspect of the culture?

I grew up speaking Cantonese and had Mandarin lessons at school once a week. I found Mandarin enjoyable to learn and loved the sense of achievement that came with understanding another language. As I grew older, my curiosity continued to grow. I listened to Mandarin songs, watched TV dramas, and became fascinated by how native speakers expressed themselves. I often found myself wondering, "How would I say this in Mandarin?" or "Is there a more natural or colloquial way to say it?"

Since then, Mandarin has become a natural part of my daily life and culture. As my interest in Mandarin grew, I found myself becoming just as interested in how people learn languages. When I started teaching, I realised how rewarding it was to help students discover that Mandarin is much more approachable than they had imagined.
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

I would choose Mulan. Although she is a fictional character, she represents courage, resilience, and the willingness to embrace the unknown. Those qualities remind me of language learning, where progress often comes from stepping outside your comfort zone, having the confidence to keep going even when making mistakes, and becoming stronger through the journey.
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or expression in the language that you particularly like?

One of my favourite Chinese characters is 「愛」 ("love") in Traditional Chinese. I love that it contains the component 「心」 (heart), reminding us that love comes from the heart. To me, love is one of the strongest human emotions and the deepest way people connect with one another. It is one of the many reasons I find Chinese characters so beautiful—they often carry meaning beyond their pronunciation.
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Language allows people to connect with others, understand different perspectives, and build meaningful relationships. Mandarin is spoken by hundreds of millions of people around the world, and one of the most rewarding parts of teaching is seeing students use Mandarin confidently outside the classroom for the first time—whether ordering food while travelling, chatting with family members, or simply enjoying a conversation. Those moments remind me that learning a language opens doors to new experiences and meaningful connections.
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

Many people find pronunciation and tones challenging at first. However, I believe the biggest obstacle is often confidence rather than the language itself. Students make much faster progress when they focus on communication, practise consistently, and allow themselves to make mistakes. I often remind my students that mistakes are proof that learning is happening. In my experience, consistency and speaking practice are far more important than striving for perfection.
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

One of the things I enjoy most about learning languages is the moment they stop feeling like a translation exercise and start feeling natural. I experienced this while learning Mandarin, and more recently while learning Turkish.

I still get excited when I realise I've understood an entire conversation without translating it in my head, or when I catch myself thinking in Turkish instead of English. Even now, I'm constantly curious. I often find myself wondering, "How would I say this?" or "Is there a more natural or colloquial way to express it?" Those small discoveries make language learning exciting and remind me that there is always something new to learn.
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Living in Sydney has given me the opportunity to meet people from many different linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Through teaching students from around the world, I have learned that everyone approaches language learning differently, and this has helped me become a more adaptable and effective teacher.

I have also participated in language exchange trips in China, where I practised Mandarin in everyday situations with local people and experienced the culture firsthand. Those experiences taught me that real communication is very different from textbook conversations. Soon, I will be spending time in Hong Kong and mainland China, which will allow me to continue immersing myself in Chinese-speaking environments, exploring regional cultures, and deepening my understanding of the language.
