About Baz
I'm a professor of photography and a practicing artist with over a decade of teaching experience across college, university, and workshop settings. I specialize in helping students of all levels—whether you're just picking up a camera or working through advanced conceptual projects—develop both technical fluency and a strong personal voice. My background spans analog and digital processes, studio and natural lighting, editing in Lightroom and Photoshop, and writing about images with clarity and confidence. I’ve guided Photo One students through the basics, coached BFA and MFA students on thesis work, and helped working photographers overcome creative blocks. I believe photography isn’t just about taking pictures—it’s about learning to see, to say something, and to build a sustainable, curious practice. My goal is to help you feel more confident with your tools, more connected to your ideas, and more capable of making the work that matters to you.

As a professor at several different colleges and working artist, my tutoring approach blends technical fluency with creative exploration. I don't believe in cookie-cutter lessons—each session is built around where you are and where you want to go. Whether you're learning how to use a camera for the first time, building confidence in your visual voice, or flexing advanced conceptual muscles, I’ll meet you there.
My teaching method balances structure with freedom. We might start with fundamentals—exposure, composition, lighting—and quickly move into the "why" behind the image. I use critique, references to contemporary artists, and prompts that break you out of creative ruts. Think of it like unblocking photographic writer’s block. I’m not just helping you take better photos—I’m helping you make more intentional work.
A typical lesson can include technical exercises, shooting challenges, or image reviews, depending on your goals. If you're working on a project or portfolio, we'll create a roadmap together. If you're just starting out, we’ll build a strong foundation and go from there.
I’ve taught everyone from Photo One students to advanced BFA and MFA candidates, and I love working with folks who are passionate, stuck, curious, or all three. If you're in high school, college, a degree program, or a working artist returning to the basics—these lessons are for you.
What sets me apart is my ability to toggle between technical and conceptual fluency. I know when to push, when to explain, and when to get out of the way so you can surprise yourself.
