About Haley
I'm a native Mandarin and Shanghainese speaker, an education professional and a musician, with a BSc in Psychology and an MA in Early Years Education. I've been in the UK for 10 years, studying and working, and my passion for education has stayed with me throughout.
Outside teaching, I've spent over five years playing Silk and Bamboo music (Jiangnan Sizhu) with my ensemble in London. It's a traditional style once heard in the tea houses around Shanghai, and it keeps me closely connected to the culture I love sharing with my students.
I truly believe that language and culture are deeply connected. Learning Chinese is about more than vocabulary and grammar. It's about discovering the logic, the artistry and the reasoning behind the language, and understanding how people speak and think. My role is to guide you on that journey of curiosity.
I use a variety of approaches, shaped around your goals and interests, and I like to think of us as a team navigating your learning together. Whatever your age or your needs, I'm confident we can find a way to make every lesson fun and fulfilling.

My aim is simple: to help you enjoy learning Chinese language and culture. I believe the best learners are curious ones, so I'll get to know your interests, needs and goals, then tailor every lesson to you. That way you'll reach your goals and also grow into a confident, independent learner. Think of us as a team, working together towards what you want to achieve.
My lessons are open to anyone, of any age, who's keen to learn. I teach both online and face-to-face in Cambridge. I draw on my studies and research in education and psychology, as well as my experience working in schools, to make every lesson meaningful and rewarding.
For children: I use play-based, learner-centred and multi-sensory approaches, grounded in early years research, so little ones learn naturally while having fun.
For adults: Lessons are built around what matters to you, whether that's travel, work, family, culture, or simply the joy of a new language.
Shanghainese and Shanghai culture: As a fluent Shanghainese speaker, I'd love to share everything about Shanghai with you, from the language to the food, the music and everyday life. This is a rare chance to learn a dialect that's hard to find taught anywhere else!
I don't follow a textbook. Instead, I bring Chinese to life through music, drawing, film, TV shows, cultural discussions and anything else that sparks your interest. As a musician, I play Jiangnan Sizhu (Silk and Bamboo music), a traditional style from the regions around Shanghai that was originally played in tea houses, and I love bringing it into lessons. I hope you'll take away as much joy as progress from every lesson!
