  • Did you grow up speaking this language? Or were you inspired by a trip abroad, an individual or a certain aspect of the culture?

I was born in Colombia and grew up in a culture that values living abroad and learning other languages. Teaching Spanish has reminded me of the privilege of being Colombian. We are the second most biodiverse country in the world, a paradise with ethnic diversity that makes you feel like you are in Africa and pre-Columbian America at the same time.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

Without a doubt, the Colombian painter Fernando Botero. His voluminous figures reflect the everyday life of Colombian popular culture and also address issues like the armed conflict in Colombia and the torture at Abu Ghraib prison. Despite his humble beginnings, his authenticity and technical perfection made him the most valued Latin American artist in the art market. Botero painted until 91, always in love with life and painting.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or expression in the language that you particularly like?

In Bogotá, we use the expression "veci," a diminutive of "neighbour," to connect with small business owners and our neighbours. This expression reflects the importance of neighbourhood life for Colombians. Small fruit shops, restaurants and bookstores are the heart of the neighbourhoods, serving as essential meeting places.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Today, Spanish has more than twenty-four million students worldwide, according to the Cervantes Institute. This means that the language travels and transforms as it reaches different cultures. Learning Spanish is an opportunity to bring us closer and understand each other despite our differences.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

Most intermediate students struggle with the verbs "ser" and "estar," the contrast between past tenses, and the subjunctive. Cognitive grammar offers a more effective approach for students to integrate conjugations and verbs more intuitively. I am currently getting certified in cognitive grammar with Spanish philologist Rafael Muriel to offer a more comprehensive and meaningful learning experience.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

Five years ago, I attended an English immersion lunch. I felt intimidated because I didn't think my English was good enough to hold a conversation. I decided to focus on enjoying the lunch and the opportunity to be in an English-speaking environment instead of avoiding mistakes. So I was able to engage in the conversation and use expressions I hadn't consciously learned, thanks to the comprehensible input strategy.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Since I boarded the plane to Australia, I decided to communicate in English and have conversations on advanced topics to increase my vocabulary and practice more complex conjugations. I not only improved my English but also learned to enjoy my mistakes and met people who are now close friends.
