A good lesson often weaves these pillars together. For instance, a lesson on reading a passage might focus on a specific comprehension strategy (e.g., making inferences), but it would also implicitly require students to use their phonics, fluency, and vocabulary skills to access the text in the first place. 3. Gradual Release of Responsibility Effective literacy lessons follow a "I do, we do, you do" model, which gradually shifts the responsibility from the teacher to the student. * "I Do" (Teacher Modeling): The teacher models the skill or strategy, thinking aloud and showing students exactly how to do it. * "We Do" (Guided Practice): The teacher and students work together to practice the skill.
