About Paolo

I started playing the piano in Naples when I was 9, and from the beginning I took that as an amazing gift to communicate with others. I perfected my technique through classical music studies in Naples, before moving to Paris to study modern music. There I completed a double master’s degree in music and philosophy at the CNSMDP and ENS, with a dissertation on the esthetic of music from an anthropological perspective.

In the meantime, I focused my playing on jazz and started my career as a musician in Italy and in Parisians venues, together with an intense activity as a teacher both privately with mainly adults and teenagers and in a primary school. The direct experience that I had the chance of developing in my own country and abroad helped me to create a very flexible learning approach to all students, whatever their background is. Nevertheless, most of my students are total beginners or self-learned students that want to improve their skills through a deeper understanding of modern harmony as well as classically trained musicians who want to learn how to make their own music.

Result of the combination of my 6 years’ experience as a piano teacher in Naples and Paris together with my double degree in music and philosophy at the Conservatory of Paris and the École Normale Supérieure, my teaching approach is based on three main pedagogical principles:

1. You can only grow inside a relationship. Overwhelmed by the infinite amount of learning resources that are now available online, we often forget the importance of sharing our learning experience with someone that went through the exact same process before us, and can therefore support us in our journey. This is how I like to think about my role in this process.
2. The only point from where you can start is where you already are right now. As students who want to reach a certain level of mastery, we all experienced the frustration of feeling overwhelmed by the amount of stuff that we can’t do yet, and some of us ended up thinking that they would never reach their goals. My role as a teacher is to be there to remind you how great the skills that you already have are, and how amazing you were in developing them. Because you can only start from yourself.
3. Every skill, ability and notion is learned faster when it is emotionally charged. Focused on our practice routine, sometimes we forget something very essential to our learning process: to have fun. My goal as a teacher is to make your practice always interesting for you and coherent with what your musical taste is, your personality and sometimes just your mood. We don’t always listen to the same sad songs and we’re not always in the right mood for a party… then why should our music lessons always be the same?

Translated into music education, these principles helped me develop a teaching method which is tailored on each student’s needs and aspirations, whatever your starting point is. Together, we’ll learn to know each other and assess what your already existing skills are. Starting from these, we will take our journey through a fully personalised path to a more mindful use of your aural skills in piano playing, with a focus on three major areas:

1. Ear Training and Vocal Awareness;
2. Modern Harmony and Reharmonisation;
3. Songwriting and Improvisation.

Too often neglected by the traditional methodology for classical music, these areas of interest will always remind us the main goal of this teaching approach, which is not only how to play the piano as if it was an external object for us to control, but how to make it become a new tool to express ourself and communicate our feelings in a musical way.

In this sense, our goal will never be to just understand how music works, but to gain a deeper and empathetic comprehension of how we work. Through music.
