About Jonathan
I am Dr. Jonathan Miles (D. Phil. Oxford University) and my books have been published in the UK and the USA and translated into languages such as French, Italian, Czech, Polish, Chinese & Taiwanese. A film of The Wreck of the Medusa is in pre-production. As an editor I have experience in fiction and non-fiction. I have also copy edited government documents.
After three decades of coaching adults for University of Oxford Department of External Studies summer schools, University of Berkeley Extension summer schools, private workshops in the United States, United Kingdom, the south of France as well as undergraduate teaching, I have great experience working with both experienced writers and novices. I can help you at whatever stage you have reached.

Get expert help to kick-start your writing, tune your creative instrument, or work on your manuscript before submitting to agents or publishers.
If you need stimulation to get started on a project or editorial advice on a novel, book or proposal you are writing, I can help. I can help you with your writing at any level and for any purpose.
All these services are contoured to your needs. If it’s a literary novel you’re writing, you’ll be wrestling with the ideas and language to secure a maximum of expression. If it’s a project pitched at the Mass market, you’ll be thinking of streamlining and speed. Whether you need a full session discussing your writing, or precise comments and feedback sent to you directly, our lessons will be tailored specifically to your needs.
I can also offer writing exercises – rather like the scales of a pianist or a dancer’s warm-up - to increase your flexibility and dexterity by focusing on topics such as creating character, dealing with dialogue and a sense of place.
I have a trained voice and am used to public speaking, communicating, recording audiobooks and related voice work. I can help you to speak more affectively, hold people’s attention.

I might not be a professional writer but Jonathan has supported me in pursuing my hobby of creative writing. He was patient and tailored the lessons to my level of experience. It was extremely valuable to be able to speak to such a professional - can't believe I had such a chance! I have read his books before and I really loved his narration style. It was great to hear about his writing process but he tailored his advice to my pace and style of working. He was and still is a great support and mentor.
He really helped me advance my writing and even though I don't aim to publish my writing at the moment, it was very valuable to get the assistance that boosted my confidence and helped me find joy in my writing again.Jonathan is a brilliant literary mentor who shaped my writing and journey in publishing more than any of my academic trainings could do. Personalized sessions that fitted the needs of my collection of short stories provided practical advice with real-world industry insight. What really separates Jonathan from all the rest is the ability to provide nuanced, imaginative and constructive feedback while retaining supportive and professional demeanors. His communication was always open, timely, and precisely as needed, and that made any session of editing productive and enriching. As a recent Masters graduate in English literature, I found Jonathan's tutelage far more valuable than my entire master's course put together. I would recommend him no less highly to any emerging amateur or budding professional writer looking for real and experienced support.
Jonathan was a tremendous help in preparing and delivering my series of public speech — clear, to the point, and incredibly patient. I truly enjoyed our discussions, as he was full of ideas and practical tips, always offering options that refined my delivery. His encouragement, as well as the remarkable progress I could clearly see, played a huge role in building my confidence, which made a real difference throughout my series of talks. Session by session, he guided me until I could stand before an audience with confidence, poise and assurance, making the entire process both rewarding and transformative.
Jonathan was a fantastic mentor throughout the writing process—attentive, communicative, and highly perceptive. His approach was especially valuable in my case, as I was able to engage him to read my text prior to our calls, allowing us to have deep, reflective discussions on how to improve it. His insights on structuring my nonfiction book and crafting a more engaging narration were truly invaluable. As a highly respected author, working with him was an incredible opportunity. Talking about money might be a bit crude, but he was worth every penny over our almost year-long work, and with his help, I was able to take a big step toward my lifelong writing dream. I can wholeheartidly recommend Jonathan to anyone who wants to improve their writing of any kind as he is a well-educated and versatile writer.
Jonathan is the most wonderful tutor. He has helped me enormously with my writing and has given me the confidence to write about complex topics with clarity, wit and precision. His feedback is always thoughtful and constructive, and he is such a lovely person to work with. I couldn’t recommend him highly enough!
