  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I've been fascinated by STEM subjects from a very young age. Science and problem solving always felt exciting to me, like piecing together a puzzle. I took part in a few science competitions during school, which really fired up my passion for learning. After finishing secondary school, I started tutoring and honestly fell in love with it. There's something really special about watching a student finally understand something they struggled with.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach Maths, Applied Maths, Physics, and Chemistry up to Leaving Certificate level, and Maths and Science at Junior Cycle level. I always start by making sure the foundations are solid before moving on to more complex ideas. One of my favourite things to do is connect topics to real life situations because once students see why something matters, it just clicks. I also make sure every session builds exam confidence alongside understanding.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Absolutely! One of my secondary school chemistry teachers left a lasting impression on me. She had this brilliant way of making difficult concepts feel simple and always encouraged us to ask questions without hesitation. Her lessons were engaging, fun, and meaningful. I carry that spirit into my own teaching every day.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Patience, empathy, and the ability to adapt. Every student is different and what works for one might not work for another. A good tutor listens, adjusts, and explains things in a way that actually makes sense to that individual. Above all, making the student feel supported and capable is what matters most.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

In chemistry, one of the first things I encourage students to do is learn the first 20 elements including their names, symbols, and atomic numbers. It might seem like a small thing but it's just like learning your multiplication tables. Once that foundation is there, everything else becomes so much easier to build on throughout the Leaving Certificate course.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

Keeping students engaged online can sometimes be a challenge but it's one I genuinely enjoy solving! Using tools like Zoom, shared whiteboards, and Google Drive has made lessons far more interactive and structured. Regular feedback and well organised resources go a long way in keeping students motivated and on track.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Teaching is without a doubt my biggest passion. I love seeing students grow in confidence and ability over time. It's incredibly rewarding. Outside of teaching, I enjoy hiking, travelling, and reading. Those things help me recharge and always give me fresh perspectives to bring back into the classroom.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

Over the years I've had the pleasure of working with over 100 students across Junior Cycle and Leaving Certificate levels. Seeing their results improve and their confidence grow is what drives me. I think what truly sets me apart is that I genuinely care about every student's journey and I always go the extra mile to make learning clear, enjoyable, and effective.
