About Matthew
Philosophy:
During my nine years of classroom experience at leading independent schools in the UK, I have found greatest enjoyment in developing pupils confidence. Mathematics is a subject that pupils frequently think that they cannot do, however, this is a misunderstanding - it just depends whether the teaching approach meets the individuals learning style.
Everyone can learn the language of Mathematics, if the material is presented in a creative, exciting and engaging way and given tangible application. This is the philosophy I abide by and the way I seek to deliver my tutorials.
Teaching style:
My teaching style is through positive encouragement and patience and my aim is to develop confidence in those finding areas of mathematics challenging. I seek to engage pupils with where they are at, working with them to patch their knowledge gaps and helping them to get to grips with the areas that they find difficult. Everyone is unique and I seek to personalise the support that I give to every individual in a way that is not always possible in a classroom setting.
I believe that each pupil is capable of achieving in Mathematics and seek to give them the necessary skills (and qualifications) required for life beyond school.
Personal qualifications:
I am a highly qualified secondary school teacher of Mathematics and I have nine years classroom teaching experience across three different schools. I have spent the last eight years teaching in two leading independent schools in the UK. This has given me both a wealth of subject experience across IB, Alevel and GCSE Mathematics and GCSE Physics and an excellent understanding of the exam system for each of these areas. I have access to a wide range of materials that I have used within schools to ensure that my tutoring is in-line with school curriculum's.
Having worked in boarding schools for the last eight years, I appreciate that many pupils may be studying in the UK for the first time and that this can be a difficult adjustment. My experience enables me to facilitate a smooth transition across cultures and teaching styles allowing pupils to thrive within the English education system.

A bit about me:
I have qualified teacher status and a degree in Engineering from Durham University. I am currently taking time out from teaching within a school setting to spend greater time with my young family at our new home on the Isle of Skye. I’m a Christian and I enjoy spending time outdoors in the mountains and amongst the midges!

Matt is a skilled and approachable teacher of mathematics. His subject knowledge is strong, with experience of GCSE, A Level and the IB Diploma programme. On a one-to-one basis Matt is able to help pupils gain confidence in the subject and perform well in public examinations.
Matt is an experienced teacher with 5 years of classroom experience. He has taught GCSE, IB and A level Maths courses to a high standard. He relates well to pupils and would make an excellent tutor.
I was Matthew's Head of Department when he taught with me at a leading independent school. He quickly proved himself to be a highly respected teacher; I never heard a single negative comment from a pupil or a colleague. His classes warmed to his calm authority and the pupils felt assured that they were in capable hands. His degree was in engineering but he felt fully at ease teaching the toughest A Level modules. He achieved excellent results with the top A-level pupils and the weakest GCSE ones. I recommend him very highly indeed.
