About Kathryn
I am an experienced and passionate educator with over 25 years of experience working with children and young people across both primary and secondary education. I hold a Master’s Degree in Special Education and have worked in a variety of educational and international settings, supporting students from diverse backgrounds and with a wide range of learning needs.
For the past 20 years, I have held leadership roles as a Head of Inclusion, giving me extensive experience in supporting students with additional learning needs and ensuring that every child has access to the right support and opportunities to succeed. This experience has provided me with a deep understanding of individual learning differences and the importance of creating an inclusive, supportive, and positive learning environment.
Throughout my career, I have worked with students across a broad range of abilities and needs, both within mainstream education and through more individualized support. I am able to work across primary and secondary age groups and across a wide range of academic and learning needs, including reading, literacy, comprehension, writing, numeracy, study skills, and general academic support.
I believe that every student can make progress when they are given the right support, encouragement, and teaching approach. I therefore take the time to understand each student as an individual — their strengths, challenges, interests, learning style, and personal goals — and adapt my teaching accordingly.
I am a patient, caring, approachable, and highly adaptable tutor. Building a positive relationship with my students is extremely important to me. I want students to feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and trying new things without fear of judgment. Creating a safe and encouraging learning environment allows students to develop both their academic skills and their confidence.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is helping students who may have lost confidence in their abilities. I particularly enjoy seeing a student overcome a challenge, recognize their own progress, and develop the belief that they can succeed.
My experience as a Head of Inclusion has also involved working closely with parents, teachers, school leadership teams, and other professionals to identify students' needs, develop appropriate strategies, monitor progress, and ensure that the right support is in place. I believe strong communication and collaboration are essential when supporting a child’s development.
Having worked in international educational settings, I am comfortable working with students and families from a wide range of cultural backgrounds and educational systems. I understand the importance of adapting to different approaches to learning and ensuring that each student receives support that is appropriate for them.
Above all, I am genuinely passionate about education and about making a positive difference in the lives of children and young people. After more than 25 years in education, I continue to find it incredibly rewarding to help students develop their skills, overcome barriers to learning, build confidence, and discover their own potential.
My aim as a tutor is to make every lesson engaging, supportive, personalized, and purposeful, while helping every student feel valued, understood, and confident in their ability to learn and succeed.

My Approach to Tutoring
My approach to tutoring is student-centered, encouraging, personalized, and inclusive. With over 25 years of experience working with children and young people, I understand that every student learns differently and may require a different approach to help them reach their potential.
I believe children learn best when they feel comfortable, supported, understood, and confident. I therefore aim to create a positive and engaging learning environment where students can develop their skills at their own pace while also building independence and self-confidence.
Teaching Techniques & Methodology
I adapt my teaching methods according to each student’s age, ability, learning profile, individual needs, and personal goals. I use a combination of structured teaching, practical activities, discussion, repetition, and engaging resources to make lessons meaningful and enjoyable.
Depending on the student’s needs, my approach may include:
Phonics, phonemic awareness, and reading strategies
Guided reading, fluency, and comprehension
Vocabulary development, spelling, and written language
Literacy and numeracy support
Developing study and organizational skills
Breaking complex tasks into smaller, manageable steps
Visual, practical, and multisensory learning techniques
Games and engaging activities to reinforce learning
Repetition and reinforcement where appropriate
Questioning and discussion to develop understanding and critical thinking
Positive reinforcement to build confidence and motivation
Individualized strategies to support specific learning needs
With my background in Special Education, I am experienced in identifying barriers to learning and adapting lessons and teaching strategies accordingly. I can work across a wide range of areas of need and am comfortable supporting students who require additional academic, learning, or developmental support.
My goal is not simply to help students complete their work, but to help them understand how they learn, develop effective strategies, become more independent, and gain confidence in their own abilities.
Typical Lesson Length
Lessons are generally 45–60 minutes, although I am happy to adapt the length depending on the student’s age, concentration, individual needs, and learning goals.
For younger students or students who find it difficult to sustain attention for longer periods, I may incorporate shorter, varied activities and movement breaks to maintain engagement and maximize learning.
Qualifications & Experience
I have over 25 years of experience working with children and young people across a range of educational settings.
I hold a Master’s Degree in Special Education and have extensive experience supporting students with a wide variety of learning needs. My experience covers both primary and secondary education, and I am able to adapt my approach across different ages, abilities, subjects, and areas of need.
I have also worked in international educational settings, giving me experience working with students and families from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds. This has helped me develop a flexible and inclusive approach to teaching and learning.
Throughout my career, I have worked closely with students, parents, teachers, and other professionals to support individual progress and ensure that learning is tailored to the needs of each child.
Who My Lessons Are For
I can work with students across both primary and secondary age groups and across a broad range of learning needs.
I can provide support in areas including:
Early reading and phonics
Reading fluency and comprehension
Spelling and vocabulary
Writing and literacy
Numeracy and mathematics support
Study skills and organization
Academic confidence and independence
Additional learning needs
Individualized educational support
Students who require extra reinforcement alongside their school learning
I am comfortable working with students who have different abilities and learning profiles and believe that the most effective tutoring begins by understanding the individual student rather than simply focusing on their difficulties.
My overall aim is to make every lesson engaging, supportive, purposeful, and tailored to the individual, while helping students make meaningful progress and develop the confidence and skills they need to become successful, independent learners.
