Zin volunteered for the Students’ Union as a Language Café volunteer from September 2021 to May 2022. The
Language Café has been operating since 2012, allowing students to experience other languages and cultures in a
formatted, social setting. Language Café staff worked weekly to create a safe, welcoming environment for
students and members of the public to learn different languages. Zin worked at the Japanese table, teaching
individuals, of all ages and skill levels, his cultural background and language. Although the leaders provided
volunteers with a theme to focus on during each Café, as well as an activity sheet with various games and
vocabulary skills, Zin took the initiative to create his own activities tailored specifically to his Japanese learners.Zin helped create a close-knit community in which students could work on individual goals and skills. He can
direct a large group of people, with his strong public-speaking skills, as demonstrated during Language Cafés
where he would instruct tables with as many as 15 students at a time. Zin was always kind to his peers and fellow
co-workers, and it was clear to me that he was passionate about the Language Café. After managing Zin for nine
months, watching his personal skills and expertise develop, I can assure you that he would be a valuable asset to
your team.
