My name is Manny Piatos and I've been playing guitar for 45 years. I published a book with Hal Leonard Publishing over 33 years ago in 1992 called Guitar Solo in an Instant (there weren't any digital players with looped rhythms to help us practice back then so please excuse the reference to looped tape). When I started playing I was drawn to all those great leads of the 70s but I was more drawn to the leads that I could tell were improvised. I didn't care much for guitarists who played a lead note for note like the record. I was hooked and I wanted to learn to improvise a lead even before I learned my chords. The trouble was all the scale books I came across were written in musical notation and I didn't know how to read music. I was fortunate enough to have a friend who had been playing for 3 years who scribbled the first pattern of the Blues scale on a napkin. From that I was able to figure out the other 4 patterns and after a while it all made sense. So I practically taught myself from using my ear and what he scribbled on that napkin. Twelve years later I wrote this book as my version of a napkin scribble, just something to help you get started using your ear and a pattern memorization with some basic information about modes and scales. I hope this book inspires you to practice improvising and enjoy it as much as I do.
