About Wajid

Developing good habits is key for growth and a long, successful career as a graphic designer. A mix of practical, creative, and professional practices can boost your skills and keep you inspired.
Foundational habits
Practice constantly. The most direct way to improve is to design something every day. This can be a short, fun project or a challenge like redesigning an existing logo or poster. Consistent practice helps build "muscle memory" and refines your instincts.
Master the fundamentals. Regularly review and apply the core principles of design, such as color theory, typography, composition, hierarchy, and balance. A strong foundation is what separates a proficient software operator from a true designer.
Embrace critique. Seek and openly accept feedback from other designers, mentors, and clients. A critique provides a valuable outside perspective that can help you identify weaknesses and grow. Don't take it personally; see every comment as a learning opportunity.
Learn actively. The design industry is always changing, with new tools and trends constantly emerging. Make continuous learning a habit by:
Reading design blogs and books.
Following inspirational designers on platforms like Dribbble and Behance.
Learning new software or new features in your existing software.
Creative and inspirational habits
Seek diverse inspiration. Look beyond just design websites. Seek inspiration from nature, architecture, fashion, fine art, movies, and everyday objects. Keep a notebook to jot down or sketch ideas that come to you unexpectedly.
Explore and experiment. Don't get stuck in one style. Try different approaches and push your creative boundaries by replicating designs you admire or simply by playing around with new techniques. Intentional mistakes can lead to unexpected creative breakthroughs.
Work on personal projects. Start passion projects that make you happy and allow you complete creative freedom. These projects are excellent for experimentation, skill-building, and keeping your passion for design alive.
Professional and productivity habits
Get a clear brief. Before starting a project, spend time with your client to get a comprehensive brief. This prevents misunderstandings, minimizes rework, and ultimately saves you time and frustration.
Manage your time effectively. Break down large projects into smaller, manageable tasks and set realistic deadlines for each phase. Use project management tools and build buffer time into your schedule to account for revisions.
Develop a consistent workflow. Organize your files with clear naming conventions, use templates for repetitive tasks, and keep your workspace tidy. A streamlined workflow allows you to focus more on creativity and less on administrative chaos.
Step away from the screen. Counteract burnout by taking regular breaks to rest your eyes and refresh your mind. Whether it’s a walk, a cup of coffee away from your desk, or a weekend vacation, disconnecting is vital for sustaining long-term creativity.
Improve your communication. Graphic design is a collaborative field. Practice articulating your ideas and design choices clearly to clients and team members. Being a better communicator reduces client problems and helps everyone stay aligned.

Becoming a better graphic designer involves cultivating habits that foster creativity, technical skill, and a professional mindset. Consistency is key to improvement, with many successful creatives dedicating specific time daily to their craft.
Mindset and creative growth
Practice visual observation daily. Everything around you is a design, from a billboard to the layout of a restaurant menu. Train yourself to notice typography, color palettes, spacing, and other design elements in your environment to build your visual intelligence.
Embrace constructive criticism. Getting feedback, both positive and negative, is crucial for growth. Learn to separate your ego from your work and use critique to identify areas for improvement.
Seek and deconstruct inspiration. Spend time daily on sites like Behance, Dribbble, or Pinterest, but go beyond just admiring the work. Analyze why a design is successful by breaking down its components, such as the font choice, color usage, and layout.
Experiment regularly. Don't get stuck in a creative rut by only using techniques you know. Regularly challenge yourself with personal projects to experiment with new colors, typography, and styles.
Find your flow. Identify when you are most productive and creative, and schedule your most important, demanding work during those hours. This could be early in the morning or late at night.
Process and technical skills
Always start with sketching. Before jumping to the computer, use a sketchbook and pen to jot down rough ideas and layouts. This helps your brain connect with your ideas more fluidly and forces you to focus on the core concept before getting distracted by software tools.
Organize your projects from the start. Establish a clean and consistent system for managing your files and layers. This will save you significant time and frustration, especially on complex projects.
Master the fundamental principles. Good habits are built on a solid foundation. Continuously revisit the core principles of design, including:
Typography: The art of arranging type to make language legible, readable, and appealing.
Color Theory: Understanding how colors work together to create harmony and emotion.
Layout and Grids: Using grid systems to create a sense of order and structure.
Get proficient with your software. While knowing the fundamentals is key, being fluent in your primary design tools (like the Adobe Creative Suite) allows you to execute your ideas more efficiently. Stay updated on the latest features and learn keyboard shortcuts to boost productivity.
Build and maintain a strong portfolio. A portfolio is your most important tool for attracting clients and employers. Regularly update it with your best, most recent work, and ensure it showcases your versatility.
Professional and client relations
Prioritize communication with clients. A great design starts with a clear brief. Practice active listening and ask probing questions to fully understand your client's needs and goals before you start designing.
Manage your time effectively. Be realistic about deadlines and dedicate sufficient time for each project. Proper time management prevents burnout and ensures you deliver quality work consistently.
Never stop learning. The design industry is always evolving. Make it a habit to stay up-to-date on new trends, tools, and techniques by reading blogs, attending webinars, and networking with peers.
Give yourself distance from your work. After spending hours on a design, it's easy to become biased. Step away from a project for a day and come back with fresh eyes to spot potential flaws or areas for improvement.
