About Merle
Growing up in the West Coast of Scotland, I have been playing folk fiddle on a professional scale for a number of years. I have recently graduated from Newcastle University's prestigious folk music degree, and now would like to share my skills and knowledge with my students.

My teaching approach is very much about creating a unique, enjoyable and comfortable space for my students. I want people to fall in love with the instrument, as I believe that the art of mastering an instrument can only come through a sheer love and enjoyment of it. I want to ignite enthusiasm in my students and teach them everything that has helped me gain accomplishment. Using various methods and activities that I have picked up myself through different teachers, I have tailored an individual teaching style which reflects my own unique alternative style, and I wish to encourage all future students to strive to discover their own personal flavour. As a folk fiddle player- I will be not only teaching students the basic steps to good technique, tone and control, but also giving them multiple creative possibilities.

Merle is absolutely terrific. Our daughter was losing interest in violin but wanted to try with a private tutor. Merle has been completely reliable, coming to give lessons to our home until Covid and now online. Merle has been very open to our daughter’s interests in music and has tailored her lessons not only towards advancing through the grades but also towards her particular tastes and interests.
