About Mary
I have volunteered for both the 4J Oregon School District and the Madison (Wisconsin) Metropolitan School District. I have passed numerous background checks and training courses. I have also been hired for one-on-one in-person ESL tutoring. While in graduate school I worked as a teaching assistant. In addition to being a native English speaker, I can speak and read Japanese and have some familiarity with Chinese and Spanish.

My teaching method is very personal, focusing on the student's individual needs and circumstances. I think it's important to build a relationship with the student and work with their strengths and weaknesses for a well-rounded learning experience. I like to break topics into smaller parts while keeping the mood light and fun. When teaching English, my first step is always to determine what the studnet WANTS to say and what is important for them to express. Feeling heard and respected is key to a good learning experience!
