About Tom
I very recently graduated from university with a degree in English Literature. The BA covered a range of texts, theories, critical scholarship, etc. which have afforded me the ability to teach both widely and specifically. What draws me to teaching is the opportunity to pass on knowledge and a love of literature. Private tutoring is especially gratifying due to the ability to establish a one-to-one relationship through which, as time goes on, a tutor can learn a student's strengths and weaknesses. This one-to-one academic relationship may also bring a comfortable learning environment for both tutor and student, and in such an environment learning is quicker, more effective, and more fun for both of us!
To be honest, I am very new to private tutoring, so it may take me some time to find my feet. But nevertheless, with the help of good students, I look forward to developing my abilities as a tutor and embrace new challenges!
From September 2021 I will be enrolling on an MA in Modern Literature and Culture at King's College London.
In my spare time, I like to walk, listen to podcasts, read (of course!) and follow politics and current affairs.

English Literature may be taught through various and varying methods. It's a broad subject! What I hope to bring to my lessons is a positive attitude towards reading and writing, an attitude which helps to make even the most daunting forms of literature accessible and enjoyable. Depending on the academic level of the student, I will use my lessons to help tackle the weaker areas of the student's studies (as perceived by myself or other teachers) through effective methods. This may include close textual analysis exercises; essay run throughs; grammar questions, and more. What is most important to me, however, is to create an atmosphere in which students feel comfortable. The most gratifying aspect of studying English Literature is the conversations about books, and I endeavour to aid students' academic progression whilst also sparking an enjoyment in reading.
