About Shawn
Hi! I’m Shawn, and I’m excited to share a bit about myself with you. I was born in Taiwan and started playing the euphonium when I was 14. At university, I studied euphonium at the National University of Tainan (NUTN) with my teacher, Yun Hung Lin, an artist for the Adams brand. My Playing Experience I’ve spent most of my time as a wind band player in Taiwan. I was the principal euphonium with the International University of Tainan Wind Symphony and the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra. I also played as principal euphonium with the Essence Wind Ensemble Band and joined many other wind bands as a guest player. In 2021, I was invited to perform as a young soloist with the Golden Hymn Brass Band, which was a big honour! I love performing and have taken part in lots of competitions and festivals. Some highlights include the SliderAsia Music Festival (2017), Taiwan Tuba and Euphonium Festival (2019 and 2021), Contest Brass Band Competition (2022 and 2023), Area Brass Band Competition (2023 and 2024), and Whit Friday (2023 and 2024). My Education After graduating from NUTN, I moved to the UK to study euphonium at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire of Music with my teacher, Chris Robertson. I’m passionate about growing as a musician and sharing what I’ve learned with others. My Teaching Experience I’ve been teaching for 5 years in different schools in Taiwan. I’ve also worked as a private brass tutor for students of all levels, teaching instruments like the euphonium, French horn, trombone, and more. At NUTN, I took a pedagogy course and spent a year working with a professor to learn how to help students overcome challenges and improve their skills with tailored practice guides. During the COVID pandemic, I taught online using Zoom. I have professional equipment—like microphones and an audio interface—so my students can hear my real sound clearly and learn the details of playing well. Why I Teach I’m dedicated to helping students grow as musicians. Whether you’re just starting or already experienced, I’m here to guide you with patience and encouragement. Let’s play music together!

I believe in empowering my students to discover their own musical voice. My goal is to encourage you to explore, experiment, and develop your unique style and characteristics, rather than just copying instructions. In our lessons, I’ll guide you to unlock your creativity and strengthen your musicality through engaging activities like Dalcroze exercises—which connect movement to rhythm—and improvisation exercises that let you express yourself freely. To make your learning journey effective, I’ll create a personalised plan tailored to your needs. This ensures you progress systematically and efficiently, building skills at your own pace. Whether you’re picking up the euphonium, French horn, trombone, or another brass instrument, I’m here to support you every step of the way. What I’ll Cover in Instrumental Lessons Together, we’ll focus on the essentials to help you play with confidence and skill: Breathing Technique: Learn how to control your breath for power and endurance. Tonguing Technique: Master clear and precise articulation. Embouchure: Develop a strong, flexible lip position for better tone. Fingerings: Get comfortable with your instrument’s layout. Music Appreciation: Explore different styles and pieces to inspire you. Listening Training: Sharpen your ear to hear details in music. What We’ll Cover in Theory Lessons If you’re preparing for exams or just want to understand music deeper, we’ll dive into: Exam Syllabus: Everything you need to ace your music theory exams. Theory Exercises: Fun, practical tasks to build your knowledge. Mock Tests: Practise under real conditions to boost your confidence. Why This Matters My approach is all about helping you grow as a musician and as an individual. By blending creative exploration with structured learning, I aim to make every lesson enjoyable and rewarding.
