About Desmond
I am a friendly and patient tutor who focuses on making Maths and Physics easier to understand by breaking challenging topics into clear, manageable steps. I believe students learn best when they understand the reasoning behind a method rather than simply memorising it.
I have experience tutoring GCSE students and adapt my teaching to each student's current ability, whether they need help building confidence, strengthening their foundations or preparing for exams. I encourage students to ask questions, learn from mistakes and gradually become more independent in their problem-solving.
My aim is not simply to help students get through a particular question, but to give them the understanding and confidence to approach unfamiliar problems themselves.

My approach to tutoring is centred on understanding, not memorising. I first identify the areas a student finds difficult, then break each topic down into clear, manageable steps before gradually increasing the difficulty. I use worked examples, targeted questions and exam-style problems to make sure the student can apply what they have learnt independently.
For Maths and Physics, I place particular emphasis on understanding the reasoning behind each method. Rather than simply showing a student how to get an answer, I encourage them to explain their thinking, identify mistakes and develop reliable problem-solving techniques. I also adapt lessons according to the student's strengths, weaknesses and goals.
Lessons are typically 60 minutes, although longer sessions can be arranged where appropriate.
I have experience tutoring GCSE students and have a strong academic background in Maths and the sciences, including GCSE Combined Science (7-6). I also have experience supporting students with their understanding of difficult academic concepts and adapting explanations to suit different learning styles.
My lessons are primarily aimed at GCSE students, with support available for students who want to strengthen their foundations, improve their confidence, prepare for exams or push towards higher grades.
