About Darrel
I have a strong academic interest in modern European history, with particular depth in the causes and consequences of the First and Second World Wars and the early Cold War period.
My approach to tutoring is structured and exam-focused. Rather than simply revising content, I help students understand how to construct high-mark answers, analyse sources effectively, and explain historical causation clearly and logically.
I place emphasis on clarity of argument, precise evidence selection, and building confidence under timed conditions. Many students know the content but struggle to translate that knowledge into structured, analytical responses this is where I focus most.
I aim to create a calm but challenging learning environment, encouraging students to think critically rather than memorise mechanically.

My lessons are structured, focused and exam-driven.
The first session is always used to assess current understanding, exam technique and written structure. From there, we build a clear improvement plan tailored to the student’s specific gaps.
A typical lesson will include:
– Clarifying key historical concepts and chronology
– Breaking down exam questions (8, 12 or 16 mark)
– Teaching a clear answer structure for high-mark responses
– Practising explanation rather than simple description
– Improving source analysis and evaluation skills
– Timed question practice where appropriate
I place strong emphasis on causation, consequence, significance and interpretation — the areas that often separate Grade 6 answers from Grade 7–9 responses.
Students are expected to engage actively in sessions. I guide, challenge and refine their thinking rather than simply delivering information.
My goal is to build confidence, clarity and structured exam performance.
