About Iona Catherine

Hi, I’m Iona Catherine — a professional music producer, studio engineer, and mentor offering bespoke one-to-one tuition and mentorship online and in South East London.

I have over 10 years of combined professional and academic experience, including leading workshops and lectures in studio recording at Goldsmiths, University of London and holding a Master’s degree in Popular Music.

I offer personalised mentorship in all things music production, recording, and mixing, tailoring each session to your goals and current level — whether you’re refining your production workflow, preparing for further study, building confidence in the studio, or releasing fully produced music to a professional standard. I focus on helping my students do their best work and develop skills that last a lifetime.

Lessons combine bespoke discussion, practical, hands-on tasks, and expert feedback grounded in real-world musical application. I have taught over 100 students of all ages and abilities, with excellent outcomes including successful music college entry and independent music releases.

Alongside teaching, I work professionally as a music producer and studio engineer based at Hackney Road Studios. My credits span a wide range of artists and projects, including work with Geese, BBC Radio 4, the GB Rowing Team, Bill Dare, and Goblin. I bring this real-world experience to my mentoring and teaching.

A clear DBS check is in place.

About the lesson

At its simplest, music production is the careful creative process of capturing and showcasing the raw recordings of a track, arranging them in the sonic sphere in such a way that a listener can truly connect with the artist's intention.

More complexly, it can build an intriguing world of sound around the core songwriting/compositional elements through synthesis and sound design, extra recorded or MIDI instruments, field sounds, and piles of SFX and plugins such as reverbs, delays, pitch shifts, EQs, compressors, distortions, and more, surrounding the listener with energetic aural intricacies.

I teach all of this and more. From the basics of how to use music production software and how to put sounds together, to creating fully recorded, produced, mixed and mastered music projects ready for release.

For artists, producers, and engineers who are further along, I offer focused, in-depth mentorship around career direction and professional development.

REVIEWS:
"My experience of learning music production with Iona has been overwhelmingly positive. She has excellent knowledge which she teaches in an accessible easy to understand way. Also, she is a brilliant facilitative teacher, encouraging you to put things into practice."

"Iona is an engaging and knowledgeable music composing teacher. She helped reignite a passion for the art that I feared I had lost since lockdown. She is patient and compassionate and really engaged with me on things I’m most interested in, tailoring each lesson according to what I want to learn."

"My 12 year old daughter wanted to learn music production. [Iona's] in-depth knowledge of Ableton and her strong music background have been a perfect fit for tuition. My daughter has a weekly 1 hour lesson via zoom and has progressed with basic setup to compiling beats and working towards songs. She has covered midi, instrument selection and use of microphone. Ableton is far more complex than I realised and having 1:1 with Iona I have seen great progress. My daughter looks forward to lessons and most importantly has fun with Iona making music!"

Perfect! I just had my first music production session, and I'm so pumped about how it went! I was a bit nervous about picking up and understanding the logic behind it all, but Iona was absolutely amazing. She really broke everything down and took the time to explain things in detail without overloading me with too much info right off the bat.

I've been searching forever for a good music production teacher, and I think I finally found the perfect one. Iona's incredible, and I'd recommend her to anyone interested in learning.

Perfect! Iona is patient, knowledgable and encouraging. I thought an hour of tuition might drag a bit but quite the opposite - the time flies by. I’ve learned a lot so far and it’s only lesson two.
