About Wiaan
Hi, I'm Wiaan — a TEFL-certified English and Afrikaans instructor based in Cape Town, South Africa, with over five years of professional teaching experience and more than 5,000 hours of one-on-one lessons delivered online.
I hold a BA in Human and Social Sciences with a major in Psychology, an NCFE-accredited Diploma in Life Coaching, and certifications in Facilitation and Motivational Interviewing. Before moving into language instruction, I spent six years as a qualified psychological counselor and life coach — which means I bring more than just language expertise to my lessons. I understand how people learn, how to build confidence, and how to make even the most anxious student feel at ease.
I currently work as both an English instructor and an Instructor Mentor at Berlitz, one of the world's leading language training organizations, where I not only teach but also quality-assure and coach other instructors. I'm fluent in English (C2, native) and Afrikaans, and I have a strong comprehension of Dutch.
My students range from teenagers to working professionals, and I specialize in conversational English, business English and IELTS examination preparation. I'm patient, structured and genuinely invested in your progress — and I won't move on until you feel confident.

Whether you're a complete beginner or preparing for a high-stakes exam like IELTS, I tailor every lesson to your specific goals, pace and learning style. After 5,000+ hours of one-on-one instruction and years of mentoring other language teachers, I've learned that the best lessons feel like a conversation — structured, purposeful, but never stiff or intimidating.
What makes me different is the combination of my TEFL certification, my BA in Human and Social Sciences (Psychology), and my background as a psychological counselor. I understand how people learn, how anxiety affects performance, and how to build the kind of confidence that actually sticks. Students don't just improve — they start to enjoy the process.
What I teach:
I offer lessons in English (conversational, business and academic), IELTS examination preparation, and Afrikaans. I can teach in English or Afrikaans, and I have a strong comprehension of Dutch which can be useful for Dutch-speaking students learning English.
What a typical lesson looks like:
Sessions are structured but flexible. We'll begin with a short warm-up or review, move into the main focus area — whether that's grammar, writing, speaking fluency or exam technique — and close with clear takeaways and next steps. I always check in on how you're feeling about your progress, not just whether you got the answer right.
Who my lessons are for:
I work well with teenagers and adults at all levels — from foundational English to advanced academic or professional use. I'm particularly effective with students who have struggled with traditional classroom methods, learners preparing for IELTS or other English proficiency exams, and professionals who need clear, confident English for the workplace.
