About Mariel

Hi, I'm Mariel! I have my Bachelor of Arts (Honours) and Master of Arts in English Literature from Queen's University. During my graduate studies, I worked as a Teaching Assistant while maintaining a 4.15 GPA. I am friendly, enthusiastic, and passionate about student success. My goal is to help you develop the skills, study strategies, and confidence you need to work independently. I have a personalized approach to tutoring: we will tailor your sessions to suit your personal learning style, challenges, and goals. My aim is to help you achieve both academic excellence and personal fulfillment as you discover the joy and rewards of studying English Literature through fun, engaging sessions.

From Fall 2018 to Summer 2023, I worked with Student Academic Success Services at Queen's University as a Peer Writing and Learning Assistant. As a Peer Writing Assistant, I worked one-on-one with undergraduate students and English as an Additional Language (EAL) learners, assisting with skills including essay writing, literary analysis, and editing. As a Peer Learning Assistant, I educated students on effective study habits, including note-taking, time-management, and strategies for managing procrastination and academic frustration.

My favourite areas of study include literary theory/criticism and 20th/21st c. literature. Beyond reading and writing, I enjoy playing the piano, cooking, and spending time with my friends, family, and poodle. :)

About the lesson

Are your grades in English lower than you'd like? Are you confused by assignment expectations or your teacher's feedback? Do you want to develop the study skills and confidence to be able to work independently? I want to help you reach both your academic and personal goals!

I have expertise in academic English at the high school, undergraduate, and graduate levels, with an emphasis on essay writing, exam preparation, and literary analysis skills (close reading). I am also an experienced editor who can help revise essays and applications. For lessons, I am happy to either design a custom lesson plan based on your goals or to work in a role supplementing your academic existing framework (e.g., assisting with specific assignments).

My goal as a tutor isn't simply to improve your grades on a single course or a single assignment. I am passionate about student success and I will work with you to develop skills, study strategies, and confidence that you can bring with you. My approach as a tutor is highly personalized: we will tailor your sessions to suit your individual learning style, challenges, and goals.

I am a friendly, patient, and enthusiastic instructor and I aim to keep learning fun and engaging: I can design assignments and find source material that suits your interests. I hope to help you achieve both academic excellence and personal fulfillment as you discover how rewarding it is to study English Literature.
