About Sam
My name is Sam Jonas, I graduated last year (June 2023) from Northwestern University with a BA in film. Almost all of my assignments that weren't film related were extensive essays based on artwork, literature, anthropology, psychology, or films. With all these essays, I was able to develop a system for my own writing that was both effective and simple. Between all these papers, I also continued to write on my own, writing four feature length screenplays as well as two shorts in my time at school.
I also worked as a summer camp counselor for the last 4 years and have extensive background working with kids of all ages and backgrounds. Working with young-adults is one of the most rewarding things in the world for me, and it would be my utmost honor to help students discover the magic of writing and finding the power of their own voice.

My approach as a tutor and educator is to help you find your voice first and then give you the tools to help express yourself in a way that is concise and understandable for other people to digest.
My lessons are for middle and high schoolers who are looking to improve their writing, and who want help finding their own unique voice.
- All of my lessons will start with a free-write
- We will look at successful essays and non-successful essays in order to understand what separates them
- We will look at poetry in order to look at conciseness (and beauty) of language
- WE WILL WRITE! The only way to make your writer better, and easier is to write more and more.
My method is focused on student guided learning, I believe that it is important to leverage what the student finds interesting or engaging to make learning the techniques as fun and engaging as possible. It is to the utmost importance to me that the student finds what they write about fulfilling and appealing at first, so when it comes time for bigger essays and college-prep, they can simply pull from their own experience and habits to give their essays a life of their own.
