About Amelia
I hold a bachelor's degree in physics from Lawrence University and attended the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign as a Ph.D. candidate for 2.5 years. As a researcher, I studied the Milky Way's central black hole, active galactic nuclei, and cosmology. I have taught classes such as Introduction to Astrophysics and Computational Mechanics. In addition, I spent time tutoring students from diverse backgrounds at all levels in mathematics, physics, and astronomy.

I strongly believe in building foundational knowledge that will set students on the right course through their educational career. Science is built on the fundamentals of mathematics, so learning algebra, calculus, and statistics is key to understanding the nature of the universe. I stress the importance of knowing why something is true rather than only focusing on getting the answer. I have tutored students in middle school through college, and have been a teaching assistant for many physics and math classes at the college level. A typical session might look like reviewing core concepts from the week before jumping into questions about assignments.
