About Jennifer
Hello! I'm Jennifer Kennedy, flute teacher at the Kennedy Flute Studio and a freelance performer now based in La Crescenta-Montrose, CA. I grew up in Southern California where I began my musical studies in 2003, and I started teaching in 2009. It's so special for me to be teaching in my hometown, building a flute studio much like the one I grew up in. As a private flute teacher, I value the individualized learning that I am able to provide for each student. I love being free to uplift and empower each student as an individual in exactly the flavor and style that works for them. Throughout high school and college, I played in flute choirs, chamber ensembles, bands, and orchestras. I earned my bachelor's in Flute Performance from the University of North Texas in 2016, and my master's degree in 2017 from Stony Brook University. While living in Monterey County from 2019- August 2025, I established an independent teaching studio, Kennedy Flute Studio, and mentored flutists of all ages. My students have performed in youth orchestras, summer music festivals, annual solo recitals, church services, community events, local solo competitions, regional honor band, CA All-State Honor Band, and more. As a professional musician, I have performed with local orchestras like Monterey County Pops!, the I Cantori di Carmel Orchestra, Ensemble Monterey, and the Monterey Symphony. With the Monterey County Pops! Woodwind Quintet, I performed in assemblies offered to local elementary schools at no cost to introduce young students to instruments of the orchestra through the musical story, Peter and the Wolf. I also performed woodwind quintet concerts in retirement and rehabilitation facilities for a similar outreach program offered by Monterey County Pops! called Music for Seniors. During my undergraduate and graduate studies, I worked with mentors who were pivotal in my development as a flutist and teacher. I'm grateful to Francine Ross Pancost, Terri Sundberg (Flute Professor at University of North Texas), Jim Walker (Flute Professor at USC), Carol Wincenc (Flute Professor at Stony Brook University and the Juilliard School), and others who have given me guidance and taught me how to be a great teacher.

FLUTE FOR ALL: I strongly believe that anyone can play the flute, and I also believe one's musical success relies on technical capability just as much as mental will and fortitude. As a teacher, I strive to teach my students the power of a reframe, a good practice strategy, and patience. EMBRACING INDIVIDUALITY: In order to thrive in a space where so much is new (and potentially overwhelming), my highest priority is to ensure that each student feels seen, heard, and comfortable during their lessons. This way, they have maximum bandwidth to learn, while also enjoying the process. PERSONALIZED LEARNING GOALS: As a flute teacher, it's my role to deliver what each student needs to thrive, so I have become adept at adapting. I am perceptive and open to hearing what learning styles or tips work for each individual. I think of myself as each students' co-detective in problem-solving the sticky passages and concepts that arise while one learns how to play an instrument, not as an authority figure who always knows best. WHAT I EMPHASIZE: During lessons, we cover standard etudes and scales as well as solo repertoire specifically chosen to stretch one's musical knowledge and abilities. I also emphasize the basics of how to efficiently practice, effectively produce sound, and elegantly perform before an audience. STUDENTS SERVED: I have worked with students from 5-years-old to 95-years-old (literally) ranging in ability from day-one beginner to doctoral music students! So if you're interested in starting flute for the first time, you have recent experience taking lessons, or if you're returning after decades, I would love to work with you! MY CREDENTIALS: I have my degrees in Flute Performance from the University of North Texas (Bachelor of Music), and Stony Brook University (Master of Music). You can learn more about my teaching and performance experience at my website.

My daughter studied with Jennifer for over five years, progressing from a total beginner to an advanced player. Jennifer is an exceptionally dedicated teacher—patient, encouraging, and always providing positive, constructive feedback. She is detail-oriented and consistently goes the extra mile to support her students, even outside of lesson time. When we sent her recordings that my daughter prepared for auditions, Jennifer would respond with detailed comments and suggestions for improvement. She kept thorough notes on each student’s progress and maintained a complete record of the repertoire learned over the years. We couldn’t have asked for a better teacher!
Jennifer was a flute instructor for my child, and took them from a total beginner to participating in a master class at the Carmel Bach Festival in a very short span of time. As a teacher, she was patient, encouraging, and very good at tailoring her approach to the individual needs of each child I saw her working with in her flute studio. She is very good at phrasing concepts in such a way that they click, and my child progressed rapidly and happily under her instruction. I would add that if your child is trans or non-binary, Jennifer will be super respectful and mindful about pronouns without making a big deal out of it, and was a safe place for my kid to focus on music and gaining confidence during the time she taught here. I was thinking about taking the flute up myself because she made it look like so much fun! She also taught a great camp in the summer that included opportunities to play alto and bass flute, and clearly knew her stuff about creating lesson plans for students to go as far as they wanted to in music, while not putting too much pressure on them. Jennifer has my gratitude.
If you’re looking for the best flute teacher, congratulations — you’ve found her! Jennifer is everything you could hope for in a teacher: professional, patient, knowledgeable, and wonderfully funny.
My 10-year-old son started with Jennifer as a complete beginner, and just a year later, he was accepted into a youth orchestra! In my son’s words, Ms. Jennifer’s lesson is “kind of addictive”! We miss Jennifer so much — her smile, her encouragement, and the trust she placed in her students. You’re truly lucky to have her in your area — don’t miss the opportunity to learn from her!I was a Flute student of Jennifer‘s for two years. She always made me feel comfortable and I learned something from her expert teaching each session. She is a remarkable teacher as well as a patient and wonderful person.
