About Jodie
I'm Jodie, and English has been the constant thread through everything I've done — from a First-Class degree in English Language and Literature, through a Master's in Creative Writing, to working in a school environment where I see first-hand how much confidence and clear communication matter to young people's progress.
I want to teach because I remember exactly what it felt like to sit in an exam not quite trusting my own analysis, or to stare at a blank page unsure how to start an essay. I'm drawn to tutoring because I can offer students both the technical precision they need for exam success and a genuine love of language and storytelling that I hope makes lessons feel worthwhile, not just another task on a revision list.
I bring a close, practical understanding of what examiners are looking for, alongside real experience as a writer myself — across essays, fiction, and poetry — so I can help students develop not just exam technique, but real confidence in their own writing and ideas. I'm patient, encouraging, and genuinely invested in helping each student find their own way into a text or a topic, rather than just handing them answers to memorise.

My approach starts with understanding exactly where a student is struggling - whether that's a specific paper, text analysis, essay structure, or confidence under exam conditions - and I build each lesson around that, rather than working through a fixed, generic syllabus. I work closely with the AQA mark scheme and assessment objectives, so every session focuses on the skills that actually gain marks, while also building genuine analytical and writing ability.
Lessons typically combine close analysis of set texts and unseen extracts with structured essay planning and exam technique, adjusted lesson to lesson based on what a student needs most. For students who are interested, I'm also happy to review creative writing pieces and offer feedback, drawing on my background as a writer.
A typical lesson runs 60 minutes. I hold a First-Class degree in English Language and Literature and a Master's in Creative Writing, giving me a strong grounding in both close textual analysis and the craft of writing itself. My lessons are aimed at GCSE and A-Level students—whether you're working towards a specific grade, need focused help with a particular text, or want to build stronger essay-writing and exam technique more broadly.
