About Walter
I provide mental, and physical technique training in volleyball. I am a USA Volleyball Juniors coach, a Gold Crown coach, and a High School coach with over a decade of head coaching experience.
I believe in coaching the whole athlete. Not just skills and technique. I believe in teaching the athlete to break down technique, in order empower the athlete to be confident in self-correction. I also believe in equiping the athlete with tools that will promote confidence, and empowerment.
My teams, as well as my private lesson roster have achieved USAV Tournament championships, appearances at Girls Junior National Championships, Gold Crown Championships, and I am the varsity assistant and JV coach at a school that was a recent state runner-up (2018), and just won a State Championship (2019).
I have a decade of experience coaching SUCCESSFUL competitive volleyball teams from ages 12-17, as well as rec league fundamentals for ages 8 and up. I have a BA in Communication Arts. While in college I was also an award winning public speaker. So finding ways to communicate and motivate with my words is something at which I excel.

When I don't know the athlete well, I ask for a text/email in advance to outline what they hope to get out of the lesson(s).
Example of what I generally get back:
- I want to hit better
- I want to be a better passer
- I want to work on serving, hitting, and serve-recieve
When time permits, I usually use text/email to get the athlete to revise those things with some direction. This communication will start to get them familiar with the terminology we will also use for the mental training component.
For example (with respect to the items above):
- "Hit better" isn't specific. Let's refine the goal to what you feel needs attention. Is your approach and timing causing errors? Do you tend to hit high and out of bounds? Do you have trouble with your timing? Are you an outside, middle, opposite?
- "Be a better passer" is what we all want :). But let's be more specific. Serve-receive or defense? Both? Do you tend to struggle with one more than the other? Where do you feel the least comfortable and why?
- That is a LOT to cover in a one-hour lesson. Let's prioritize what you really need most to get the most out of your next practice. Usually we can skip serving because it doesn't give you a lot of value for your money. Serving is 1/2 of one rotation so it is a very small part of your game. That said, if that's a huge priority, we'll do it! What one to two things would give you the most benefit in your next practice and game?
Then, when we arrive, we either refine or talk about specifics of the goal while we warm up. Once we are wrarmed up, we commence work. I ask the athlete a lot of questions in the course of the lesson. These questions are designed to make the athlete pay attention to the process of each technique, and begins to illustrate to them the tools they can use to self-correct. These tools are designed to be both physically and mentally empowering. When the athlete buys in, and really engages in the process, they improve in both technique, and mental strength.
Please do not do private lessons with a coach to try to "buy" play time. It is VERY transparent to coaches. And it makes us respect the athlete as well as the parents less. PLEASE make sure that whomever you chose as a lesson instructor has some sort of social proof that they are a good, respected coach. Respect from athletes should be a HUGE indicator. Winning coaches have that one great indicator. But winning doesn't always translate to good teaching. If you have the opportunity to see reviews or speak to that coach's students, that is a huge plus.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
PLEASE consider the time you'll have. If it is one lesson for one hour, you cannot cover four skills with any type of real benefit. Consider what one or two major skills with which you are struggling, and really get into those things. You'll often find that fixing one or two things, while learning how to mentally break down and refine your own process, leads to your ability to self-correct in other ways. This ability is VERY empowering and learning it should be taken very seriously.

Walter was a great coach for my young teen daughter. He emphasized form and technique and was able to meet her at her level and offer great ideas for improvements. I would highly recommend.
We highly recommend Walter for private lessons. He is highly knowledgeable and emphasizes not only skills but mental resilience too. Our daughter has grown as a player and, more importantly, as a person thanks to Walter's coaching.
I have been working with Walter ever sense the start of my volleyball career and he has been a large part of making me into the volleyball player that I am today. I am an outside hitter who plays back row and I have always found success working with Walter. He is incredibly experienced and can observe a player and transform them as soon as he begins to work with them. I highly recommend working with Walter!
Walter is a seasoned (not old!) volleyball coach who has coached all levels of players. He is patient, yet expects players to work hard in order to improve. He doesn't just teach fundamentals of the sport, but educates players on how to read the opposing team, attack weaknesses and use their own strengths. He is also a good, honest human being - a role model for any athlete.
Walter is a great technical instructor. He also worked on my daughter's mental game and helped with her confidence. She had a lot of fun working with him!
My daughter has learned so much from Walter. He is lots of fun and makes the girls feel comfortable to ask questions. He is also very good at getting the girls to think about and recognize what they doing that may need improvement. He talks with them, not at them. Lots of laughs but they also work hard and take away valuable knowledge. Time well spent! He is also always sure to tell them what they are doing well.
Walter was extremely helpful in providing instruction for my daughter on the fundamentals of setting. He helped her understand the importance of proper footwork and gave her things she could work on at home to improve her footwork and hand skills. Most importantly he taught her to think about what she did wrong when she missed a set so that she could diagnose the issue herself and work to fix it. She learned more and made more progress through his lessons than she did from coaches during practice.

If interested, I will share my fee structure. I will say that a private lesson (one-on-one instruction) is my top hourly rate per athlete. For a small group (2-3 athletes), I drop the rate. But it is still per hour, per athlete. For a group of 4-5 athletes I will drop the rate again. Once we have six or more athletes, I will generally not do a small group lesson because I don't feel that enough attention is being paid to any one to make it worth the money. If you have a group of six or more athletes, I am happy to find a way to break the lessons into smaller groups to get them max reps for max benefit.
