About Julie
Hello! Need help with Spanish? I am an Educational Therapist who works with Discovery Therapies here in Columbia (that means I am a person who knows how to really help students bring their grades up!) I specialize in teaching study skills and memorization strategies. I also love teaching Spanish. I've been teaching it for four years to high school students like you, and I know how to help you succeed. After formal study of Spanish in a language school, I lived in Mexico for 20 years and taught classes in Spanish there. Now I'm back in the States and having fun helping students like you!
I love seeing my students gain confidence and have fun while learning how to learn a foreign language. I really enjoy high school-age students, and I end up learning things from them, too!
I graduated with a degree in Elementary Education in 1989 and have been teaching ever since. I have taught in schools, churches, and have homeschooled five children through high school. I also teach kids who have difficulties with learning, such as dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalulia. If your student is struggling, I understand and will build on their strengths while strengthening their weaknesses.
I completed my Bachelor's in Education and then attended the Spanish Language School at the Rio Grande Bible Institute in Edinborough, Texas. I moved to Mexico with my husband and children where we lived for about 20 years. While there I continued to study Spanish and taught classes in Spanish. About 5 years ago we moved back to the USA and I have been teaching high school Spanish classes at the SAFE homeschool co-op in Sumter, SC and at Arrows Academy in Columbia, SC. I am also a licensed Educational Therapist with Discovery Therapies, Inc.

When I begin with a new student, I like to get to know their likes and dislikes in school, their academic strengths and weaknesses, and through a few questions and a little diaglog I assess where we need to begin. Then we get rolling!
I have worked elementary, middle school, jr. high and high school students. I have worked with advanced students as well as struggling learners. I also teach English to those who speak it as a foreign language and have a TESOL certificate in that area.
Often kids who are struggling in Spanish class are the same kids who struggle in English class. Make sure your tutor is up-to-date and using best practices for struggling language learners.
For the past several months I have been volunteering as a teacher who teaches adult Hispanics who speak Spanish fluently, but never got to learn to read and write in their own language. It is a beautiful thing to hear them reading fluently for the first time as adults. Few things can beat the life-changing gift of literacy.
This year I have also been so pleased to hear my Spanish 3 students begin to converse in Spanish for the first time. They told me that previous teachers had not spent much time with conversation skills, and they were so happy to finally be speaking Spanish! They have grown so much in their confidence to pronounce Spanish correctly and they have lost the fear that was holding them back. That is so exciting!

Miss Julie is one of the most patient teachers I have ever had! Her first hand experience with Spanish was so helpful and really made it more personal, which helped me learn more!
Julie is a great teacher. She is fluent in Spanish and has taught it in our homeschool group for years. She is also highly qualified to work with struggling students. My son went from not liking Spanish to it being the subject he most looks forward to working on.
Personal attention and reasonable flexibility. Good grasp of the language and ability to encourage students.
Mrs. Moore is doing a great job with the class. The textbook that we are currently using is not the best. That is not her fault. She has a passion to help her students learn Spanish.
Mrs. Moore is a very kind and gracious teacher. We had a lot of problems with the curriculum the school had us use, but she worked hard to help us learn and utilize what we could from the difficult curriculum. It was clear that her priority was that we learn and not that we check all the complicated boxes with the text. She implemented fun conversation and music to the class time and helped us get through Spanish 3.
Ms. Moore knows so much about Spanish! Your pronunciation and comprehension will DEFINITELY improve under her guidance. She's a very calm and friendly person, and it's easy to feel comfortable speaking Spanish with her.
Mrs. Moore was extremely patient and encouraging. I could tell she really cared about teaching us and helping us to learn Spanish. She really made learning a second language fun.
Mrs. Moore has been such a big help to me. Even when I get frustrated with pronunciation or trying to understand or translate a word/sentence she’s always there to help. Her goal is to help and for her students to grasp Spanish, even if it means taking a lesson slower or focusing on a certain thing for most of the class. She makes class feel comfortable and fun. At times, when I know i just messed up a word completely, instead of being embarrassed we both just laugh it off.
Mrs. Moore was an excellent teacher because she had real experience due to living in Mexico over 20 years! She’s very kinda and super helpful when it comes to understanding Spanish!
Amazing teacher!! I had her for 2 years of Spanish and she is very knowledgeable in what she is teaching and always makes sure you understand everything and is very patient
I learned a lot from Ms. Julie and I could really tell that she cared about me learning Spanish. Ms. Julie also came up with fun exercises to make it feel less like work. She was very kind and patient.
