About Michael
I realize that not everybody has the ability to drop everything, upend their lives and move across the country to attend an Academic Audio Program. I also realize that not every lesson worth learning is taught in a school. Many of the tips and tricks used by the industry's top professionals were not learned in a formal classroom setting, but rather from watching over the shoulders of veteran engineers. For decades, this was the only way to learn and perfect this craft. There is a great history and almost tradition of top-level recording and mixing engineers taking the 'new flock' under their wing and teaching them the tricks of the trade. With so many major studios closing over the last 20 years and with the technology used to produce music being so easily obtainable, we have lost much of that tradition. Pro Audio Lessons Founder, Michael Oskam, noticed this and seized the opportunity to continue the tradition of teaching, not only the up and coming engineers of the future but, anyone and everyone who is passionate about writing and producing music, through the power of the internet. Now, people who never, in their wildest dreams, would have been able to step inside a high-end studio to watch a professional work, are being taught the same, long-kept secrets of old, from the comforts of their own homes.
I started a year or so after leaving the studio system by producing tutorials videos that I would post on YouTube. I quickly discovered that I have a knack for teaching. I have a unique ability for taking a seemingly complex topic and making it understandable and relatable.
I graduated from The Conservatory of Recording Arts & Sciences at the top of my class back in 2012. After graduation I worked in the studio system out in Los Angeles, CA. Most of that time was spent at Serenity West Studios on Hollywood Blvd. I started as an intern before working my way up to Assistant Engineer before going out on my own. As a free-lance producer and mix engineer, I got to work on many projects, some of which hailed critical acclaim. I co-produced and mixed the album "In My Shadow" by blues/rock artist Johnny Oskam, which won me an Independent Music Awards nomination for producer of the year. Through my website and YouTube channel, I have met and taught hundreds of students from all over the world, via private lessons.

I first like to get to know the student on a slightly more personal level. It's important for me to understand what their goals are in addition to their current strengths and areas of weekness. A good understanding of their current skill level helps me mold my lessons to ensure the quickest and best pathway to success. I am fluent in all major DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations) as well as all of the major plug-ins on the market. If the student has songs and/or sessions they have begun working on, I like to start there. I like to learn what music inspires them and it is important for me to fully understand what they want to get out of each lesson.
I've worked with students all over the world and from all different skill levels. From beginner to advanced, I've worked with them all.
Find someone who has some actual real world experience and who has graduated from an acredited school. There are a lot of "teachers" out there who claim to be "professionals" and yet they have never set foot in an actual studio. They have never worked with top level artists and producers and they have no real world experience. Knowing how a DAW operates is just not enough. I have a wealth of knowledge that one can only get by working alongside the industry's top professionals.
I recently met one of my personal mix heroes, Bob Clearmountain. Getting to speak with him and pick his brain about mixing was a real treat. Knowing the right questions to ask someone of that caliber is the real key to learning from them. During my conversation with him, I asked some really well thought out questions, which lead to a very enlightening conversation between us.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Make sure you know what you hope to accomplish and take an honest inventory of what areas or skills you lack. It's not enough to just say, "I want my mixes and productions to sound better." Also, it helps to have a few artists/producers/mix engineers in mind that you like and want to emulate.
