About Opalina

My service stands out because I provide a lot of structure AND independence for my students. Being a student at MIT, I value the art of experiential learning- learning by experience. The beginning of every lesson starts out with a plan- a calendar if you will- for how we should spread out your learning goals. And the rest of the lessons follow a pattern of hands-on learning. For speech, I make my students learn to give a 5-minute speech-based only on 2 minutes of prep. For the SAT, I make my students try to deduce an answer for themselves before I explain the inner workings of a question. For essay writing, I allow my student to generate their own ideas before putting my own input. My teaching style stands out because I value the character and intellect of my students. Guiding them to the answers they need is what encompasses true learning.

I also have much experience in tutoring. I tutored elementary school kids in reading, high school students in the SAT, and currently am working for the nonprofit Review for Relief organization by editing personal statements. My experience alongside my teaching style brings about a unique and beneficial learning environment.

What I enjoy most about the work I do is connecting with my students. Tutoring involves not only teaching but learning alongside someone else. I love adjusting my lessons to capture the individuality and uniqueness of each person. My favorite thing about tutoring is when my students have an "a-ha" moment. When I'm able to make my student understand a new concept, I feel that I'm making a difference for the better. :)

I first started teaching when I joined my National Honor Society chapter at my high school. I tutored kids at my local elementary school, Ober elementary, in reading and sight-word soldiers. It was this experience that inspired me to pursue more tutoring opportunities. After I received a high SAT score I started to help out students at my school, and once I went through the lengthy college application process I joined the non-profit Review for Relief to help people with their college essays. Throughout high school, I also taught novices in debate and speech. Overall, teaching gives me so much fulfillment. The idea that I can educate and help people while forming connections is something that has kept me going in my tutoring journey.

: )

I currently attend MIT and have been accepted to Duke Cornell, Vanderbilt, Georgetown, NYU, Boston, and other top schools through the college application process. Because of my experience, I wish to share the relevant knowledge I learned with others, ranging from acing standardized tests to writing the best essays. People spend thousands of dollars to get insider knowledge on the college application process. I'm here to provide my expertise at a fraction of the cost. I also have prior experience looking over essays through the nonprofit Review for Relief, which donates the money earned to COVID-19 relief.

SAT-

I self-studied for the SAT and got a 1560 the first time I took the test. I received a 770 on Reading and Writing and a 790 in math. For the reading section I only got three wrong, the writing section 0 wrong, and the math section 1 wrong. After this, I started to tutor and give tips to people at my school. Through my National Honor Society chapter, I was able to tutor underclassmen and raise their SAT scores.

Public Speaking-

I served as Vice President of my speech and debate team and also served as Public Forum Debate Captain. I taught novices how to debate, speak clearly, and create sound arguments. In speech and debate, I participated in interpretation events (similar to acting), debate events, and extemporaneous speaking. I loved my time as captain and teaching others how to speak and debate in front of large amounts of people. It was the most fulfilling part of my high school career!

My typical process depends on what subject I am teaching!

SAT-

For SAT tutoring, I first run a diagnosis and figure out how much experience the student has with the SAT and what area they need the most help in. I also help them form a calendar on the first day so that by the time they take their desired SAT date, they will be more than ready. After hose initial first lessons, I will go over the main content of the section they need the most help in, give them plenty of practice questions, and then move on to strategy work once they are ready.

Public Speaking-

For public speaking, I also have to initially assess how experienced the student is, and then I will teach lessons with impromptu speech practice, argumentation, and speech writing. Impromptu speeches will help the student become versed in many diverse topics and will also take away the nervousness and anxiety that comes from performing prepared speeches.

College Counseling-

For college counseling and essay help, the first tutor session will depend on what the student specifically needs help in. I will first help them set up a timeline to create a good college application. When will they take their SAT? What competitions can they participate in that align with their passions? How long will they give themselves to write a good personal statement? Asking these questions and coming out with a plan will provide a  solid base for successfully applying to colleges.
