About Natalia

Hi! My name is Natalia Alvarez and teaching is my passion.

I struggled academically and emotionally as an elementary and middle school student and am SO grateful for those challenges!

I teach to inspire self-worth, enhance work ethic, and overcome barriers related to reading and writing.

I have been in special education for going on 20 years. I started my career teaching 11-13 year old students at the Ivymount School. Then taught inclusion for 12 years at two different elementary schools. Currently, I am in my 5th year at a middle school level, teaching Reading Interventions.

I have my undergraduate degree in Elementary Education, my master's degree in Special Education (mild to moderate disabilitied), and am currently working towards a Reading certification.

My areas of strength are teaching reading (decoding, fluency, & comprehension), written content and writing mechanics, basic math skills, as well as, executive functioning and social emotional skills.

I became a teacher because a teacher believed in me and so I teach to inspire. There are so many elements I enjoy about teaching, but to name a few:

-the ah-ha moments students get

-how students' attitudes towards learning change for the better

-when students begin applying skills they were previously to scared/shy/insecure to do

-when students stop my attempt to help them and say they got this

My 7th grade Reading teacher was the first person aside from my mother, who believed in me and made my growth, both academically and emotionally, a priority. After high school, I went on to St. John's University to receive my undergraduate degree and have not stopped since.

As mentioned in the introduction I have an Undergraduate degree in Elementary Education, a Master's degree in Special Education, and am working towards a Reading certification.

Most importantly though, I have taugh at a special needs school for 7 years, which gave me many of thr tools I still use today to reach, teach, and inspire kids. I have worked in Title 1 schools for a total of 13 years and have taught K-8th grade content in the core subjects.

In addition, I currently teach 4 different Reading courses from foundstional skills to middle school level comprehension. I have also spent thr majority of my teaching career working with Social Emotional and Executive Functioning skills.

About the lesson

1. Fill out a google form with general information about who you are, what you believe your strengths and needs are, what area you are looking to improve in, and what you hope for in your tutor.

2. Meet over a video session to build a repore, discuss the google form data, and create a schedule for upcoming tutoring sessions.

3. Exit google form after a scheduled session to identify the pros and cons of the session, to better prepare for future meetings.

I have had the pleasure of working with a variety of students from different social, cultural, economic, and developmental backgrounds.

Find a teacher that will push you in a direction you want to progress in and will provide you with quality instruction. Do not be afraid to move on, if the match isn't right for you. Be brave enough to speak your truth and open enough to hearing the truth.
