About Janice

I have a Masters Degree in music education and experience. I taught elementary music for seven years before just teaching piano. I prefer my students to be at least eight years old to begin. I enjoy teaching teenagers and adults. I teach at my home. I have a B.A. Degree from Harding University, and an MSE in music education from ASU.

Getting to know my students and seeing their progress.

About the lesson

I begin by teaching them the notes on the keyboard and the staff. I ask them to name the notes out loud as they play. They learn the notes much quicker that way by reinforcing what they are doing: they see, they say, and they hear. I use the Alfred's basic method books which include a Notespeller, Theory Book, Lesson Book, Technic, Hymns, Pop, Favorites. All these books work together. As something is introduced in the Lesson Book, there are pages in the other books to reinforce that concept. I like to make the lessons enjoyable. If a student likes what they are doing, they will stick with it longer.
