About William (Rick)

I have 37 years experience as a professional photographer. I have a diverse career in photography covering editorial, episodic television coverage, commercial, real estate, executive portraiture, youth sports to professional sports, portraits and action. I understand light and how to use it naturally or artificially. I have worked for two large photography studios in Los Angeles before starting my freelance career in 1989. I worked as the Staff Photographer for 7 years with Disney/ABC Televison Group in Burbank, Ca. I now have started my freelance business again. I'm a member of the ICG local 600 as a Still and Portrait Photographer. I have always been willing to share my knowledge of the craft and business of photography with others. Weather they are just staring or have been in the industry for years. What ever you need to learn about the application of photography, I can teach you. I enjoy the ongoing learning process of photography. If you're satisfied with what you know and believe you need not learn more or that there is no more to learn, then you should do something else with your life. Photography is ever changing and you have to change and learn with it or become obsolete.

I got stared by just giving advice to other photographers who wanted to learn to improve their photography and were willing to listen to my advice on lighting, composition and comunication skills with the clients.



My 35 years of experience as a professional photographer working with major brands in many industries, like public relations, corporations, studios, sports, television networks etc....I have taught many younger photographers who have asked me for advice or to help solve a problem they have with lighting, composition or exposure in difficult settings or venues that challenge the traditional ways of photography. I hold an Associates Degree in Photography, but I know that my experience has at this point, earned me a Master's Degree.

First I need to understand where they are with knowledge about photography, beginner, intermediate or advanced. What cameras and equipment they are used to using. What is it they are wanting to learn about photography. Lighting, composition, mechanics of their camera. There are so many disciplines to learn in photography to become proficient. The more I understand about where they are in photography the more I can teach them without redundancy of what they may already know.



Mostly other professionals who might need a reminder or brush up on their skills and a few beginners who what to just take better photos of their family and friends.



First know what you want to learn about photograhy. Everything or just a particular disapline. Then look at the instructors work and understand that's the best they have done. Almost no one who has experience will put up images that have problems. Even though all of us have made mistakes in the past. No one is perfect. If you want to learn how to work your camera, shoot portraits that have good lighting, shoot sports or family groups etc... Have an idea of what you want to learn. It will help the instructor develope a lesson plan for you.



I worked with a good friend of mine on a youth hockey tournament. He hires me a few times a year to shoot action of the games. Shooting sports is one of my favorite things to do. Any sport will do and I have plenty of experience at it.



A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Tell the instructor where are you are (what level) in your photography and be honest about it. Ask questions regarding the experience the photographer has with what you want to learn after you have seen their web site portfolio. Tell the instructor about your experince or lack of in whatever disapline of photography you want to learn.

Details

I have a first hour charge at $75.00. Any hour after two hours is $50.00 per hour. I can supply the camera, lenses and flash equipment (Sony and Canon professional) to learn with for no extra charge. Or the student may use their own camera and lenses as long as their camera has manual shutter speed and aperture controls.
