About Lisa
Authentic Cherokee Doublewall basket weaving instruction, as well as Cherokee Cornhusk dolls. Instructor is an enrolled citizen of the Cherokee Nation, and recognized by the Bureau of Indian Affairs' Indian Arts and Crafts Board, and has been instructing others in basketry for nearly 25 years.
As an employee of the tribe, I taught at schools, libraries and camps. I love seeing people's happy faces when they've completed their first basket!!
I have made baskets for over 30 years, and have instructed hundreds of students over the course of 20 years. I was formerly an employee of the Cherokee Nation. Ultralight Respurce Center, and the Director of Language, History and Culture for the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee.

About the lesson

Students take an initial basket class to complete a small sized basket from start to finish. The students also learn about the history of Cherokee baskets, and some language vocabulary. They are encouraged to practice the making of a small basket on their own, or through refresher classes, until the feel confident to move on to learning additional skills such as making larger baskets, adding color, harvesting natural materials, the dying process, etc.
Children, adults, elders, visually impaired, mentally challenged and skeptics.
Make sure that they have experience teaching, that they are a federally enrolled Native American, and that they understand that no two baskets are the same and there is no such thing as a mistake!
The best example I have of satisfaction in teaching was when a student looked at her aunt and said, "You know, I've been very stressed lately, but I don't feel stressed now at all."
