About Jack

I've worked as a private tutor for over ten years, across a variety of subjects from maths to Oxbridge Law entrance exams, and have over 1500 hours of tutoring experience. I put a strong emphasis on long-term strategies to boost confidence, which ensures that my work with the student is beneficial both for the immediate enterprise and their future careers. I am experienced in both one-to-one tuition and classroom environments, with clients from a variety of backgrounds with a range of previous academic achievements. Above all, I am passionate about helping people achieve their full potential. My study of Jurisprudence alongside my career as an actor has afforded me broad and in-depth academic experiences across a number of fields. I combine a detailed knowledge of the humanities and arts with a firm commitment and analytical and logical reasoning. Above all, I focus on confidence, ensuring my students feel supported and sure of their abilities. I bring an honest and essential passion for the subject in which I am working with all my tutees, and hope I can foster something similar in them.

Much of my professional work hinges on confidence, and I try and bring this to the fore of my tutoring: regardless of the subject, my main focus is always on building my student’s confidence. Seeing this confidence flourish is the most rewarding part of my job: of course it's great to see incremental improvements in understanding, but confidence in one's ability provides the basis for all future improvement. So if we can foster that confidence, we can handle anything future subjects, courses or challenges will throw at us.

I’m an experienced private tutor who’s just moved to Los Angeles from London. I have a first class degree in law from Oxford University, and have worked for over 10 years in London as private tutor to a large number of clients from ages 7 up to 18. I have over 1500 hours of tutoring experience.

Much of my professional work hinges on confidence, and I try and bring this to the fore of my tutoring: regardless of the subject, my main focus is always on building my student’s confidence. I encourage them to have the confidence to speak freely, ask questions and make mistakes (and see how useful mistakes can be). With confidence comes enthusiasm; and while I might not always be able to light up a passion for whatever subject we’re working on, I find that when a student sees their own improvement, a huge hurdle to future success has been overcome. This is obviously essential when preparing someone for an interview or helping improve their English fluency; but it’s also so important in subjects like maths where so often much stigma must be overcome.

8+ Maths
Dina was applying for St Paul’s Juniors and wanted help firming up some area of understanding in maths, as well as her overall confidence in the subject.

Speaking with Confidence for three Year 5 girls
I ran a series of five group confidence sessions to help three Year 5 girls in their public speaking, interview technique and confidence. The sessions were designed to be fun and enjoyable, while having the benefit of creating a useful foundation for more formal public speaking and interview situations.

11+ Maths
Jay needed support with his maths to supplement the schools work. He was very bright, and very able, but perhaps a little uninterested in the subject. So, my job was to make maths fun – or at least challenging enough to catch his attention. It was great fun to work with him, I soon realised the way to get his focus, and the best results, was to push him to take on harder questions and bigger challenges. His work really thrived and he continued to get very impressive results from his school.

11+ Maths, English and Interview Prep
Elodie was aiming for entrance into a number of schools including City of London and wanted support for her maths and English studies. She was very clever but quite shy and we needed to build a rapport before she would feel confident with her studies. We worked together weekly for 18 months, initially focusing on building a good working relationship that later allowed me to also prepare her for her interviews. Over our work together she grew in confidence and became very strong at public speaking, wishing to pursue more of it in senior school. Her maths work went from strength to strength and she was regularly at the top of her class. She was offered a number of places and chose to attend her first-choice school, where she is now very happy.

11+ Maths (SEN Dyslexia and Dyscalculia)
I started working with Rhuenna when she was in Year 6, helping her with maths for her 11+ Exams. Subsequently I then tutored for her GCSE maths preparation three years later when Rhuenna was in Year 9. Rhuenna struggled with maths due to dyslexia and dyscalculia and needed specific support to help her achieve her desired results at 11+

13+ Maths
I worked with Darius on his maths, and his confidence in his abilities in the subject, during half-terms and holidays.

13+ Maths
I worked with Jasper on his maths in preparation for 13+ Entrance to Eton and the scholarship route: work on Indices, standard form and fractions, as well as probability, ratios and algebra. Jasper really enjoyed the puzzles that maths can throw up (for example algebraic problems) and grew in confidence through our work together. He went on to study at Eton.

GCSE Maths and English
I worked with Holly who had been predicated a number of ‘fails’ and dishearteningly low grades. This had exacerbated her lack of self-belief and she had significant confidence issues related to failure, which had impacted her motivation in both her schoolwork and in other non-academic areas of her life. We worked twice a week across all subjects, combining subject-specific tutoring with exam and revision skills and specific confidence coaching. She passed all her exams, achieving a variety of grades between A and C.

GCSE Maths (AQA)
Saif needed support sitting GCSE maths after being held back a couple of years. He struggled with a number of areas and needed novel ways of seeing and approaching the questions, topics and problems. I was able to help him better his grades above the expected level.

IGCSE Maths
I helped support Estelle through her final year of iGCSE (Cambridge) maths studies and helped her achieve a top grade in her maths exam.

IGCSE Maths (Edexcel)
I supported Leopold while he was preparing for Edexcel iGCSE maths during half terms and holidays — clearing up areas of confusion and helping him revise and prepare for the exams.

BSc Economics University College London (UCL)
Kelly came to London from China to study Economics at UCL. She was immensely bright and clearly very good at her subject, but she struggled with English and it was holding her back. I started working with her in 2015, and continued on a regular basis through her time at University. It was challenging for me, as a tutor, as Kelly wanted to practice not just her conversational English (which was already good) but also her technical conversation for use in Economics tutorials, degree level essays etc: so I had to take on a lot of new concepts, and language, to be able to communicate effectively with her. We would try and replicate tutorial and classroom environments, to give her the freedom to practice (and make mistakes!) in the safety of our tutorial space.
