About Miriam

Hello, everyone! I am a Texas Certified Math Teacher who specializes in Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2. That being said, I have a lot of experience tutoring elementary through middle school math as well. I’ve also prepped students for the math portion of the GRE and SAT.

I find creative ways to explain the concepts you've struggled with! Maybe the way your teacher or the textbook explained it isn't clicking? Maybe you need it explained ANOTHER way? Maybe you need a visual, or some manipulatives? I always tell my students, "I'm a visual individual," and if someone can't paint me a picture, I just won't understand. Maybe you're the same?

I have experience with high need students, including dyslexia, ADHD, and ASD. I enjoy watching the lightbulb go on when a student finally understands a concept!

I decided to become a teacher in college. Initially, I wanted to pursue a law degree, but all of the math teachers and professors I had really inspired me, so I changed my path.

I am a highschool math teacher, and I have taught exclusively Algebra 1 and 2 for the last 14 years.

First, I will ask what the student's goals are, and where the student struggles.

Second, I will ask for sample work that the student has submitted and for which the teacher has provided feedback.

Third, if the student and parents don't mind, I like to contact the math teacher myself to see what the needs/issues are.

If the above information is not enough for me to create a learning path for the student (at the beginning of the school year, for example, when there is little teacher feedback or knowledge), I will give the student a needs assessment.

I work with struggling students and on-level students, mostly. I did a few years of Pre-AP, but most of my career has been with students who have tended to struggle with math since elementary school. I have also taught students with ADHD, dyslexia, ASD, and medical concerns.

When looking for a tutor, it is important to ask how much experience they have teaching the subject you need help with. Every math teacher isn't experienced at explaining every single math topic. My specialty is in Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2, so I don't volunteer for Stats jobs, even though I could probably do it. I want to tutor the subjects I'm used to explaining in a variety of ways to a variety of learners.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Consider whether you are struggling in this subject because of an actual inability to comprehend the information, or whether you have fallen behind in knowledge simply due to a lack of consistency. Are you behind because you truly do not understand the math, and is this true even in class, when your teacher is assisting you or explaining the examples? Or are you behind because you didn't quite keep up with the work, didn't study, get easily distracted, and now there is too much work to catch up on?

Answering this question for yourself provides clarity for yourself and for your tutor. It allows your tutor to truly find creative ways to help you if you simply do not understand the math....It also allows your tutor to hold you accountable when you start falling behind due to procrastination. Honesty with yourself and with your tutor really matters, so they can help you the way you need to be helped.
