About Melissa
I work with students to find out exactly what they are having difficulties with and build a lesson plan based around that. Not everyone learns the same way or understands the same process, so I try to show students different ways until we find the best process for them.
I enjoy watching someone finally understand something. Sometimes it takes a lot of work and a lot of time but every student gets that awesome moment of conquering the beast known as math.
I have always enjoyed math. In high school, I was a member of the math team and graduated with honors. After high school, I joined the military and became an Engineering Assistant which was mostly math. I have helped several friends (and their children), and family members with math troubles. I now work in finance where I am lucky enough to do some math every day!

Before the tutoring session starts, I like to know what the student needs help with specifically so that I can be prepared for our session. I will ask what the student is interested in so that I can try to create some problems with the subjects they enjoy. Once I think the student has an understanding, I ask the student to teach me the process. I truly feel that people learn more when they have to show someone else how to do it.
I have worked with all ages of students, from 6-year-olds to 60+-year-olds. There is always learning to be done and sometimes it just takes the right person to explain it.
Know what you want help with. Just saying you would like help with math does not help you or the tutor/teacher. Most subjects are very broad so narrowing it down will help the tutor/teach help you better.
