About Virginia

First, I'm new but am in "Best Of" due to prior experience. Good reviews to come.... thx.

To answer the question, I connect very well with my students. College Essays are very personal. Universities want to hear from you, the authentic you. I am very good at helping my clients find their voice.

My services stand out because I am a great teacher, love tutoring and I also have been a psychotherapist.

Don't let the word scare you! To be a therapist you have to develop a trust and an honest raw way to communicate. That is a great skill!

Here is how it comes in handy. Let's say you are Editor of the School newspaper. A great activity and achievement, a perfect highlight on your application.

If you choose to write about it, you would probably say something like it's challenging, rewarding and you like keeping up on current events. All good stuff

However, not memorable. You want to be remembered, it's essential.

So what we do is add some excitement, tell a bettter narrative.

"What was the worst accident you ever reported on? A fire, a car accident, a robbery?"

"A car had fallen off a bridge, people were dying...

We could tie that into a dream you may have been having..

You keep thinking about that car and how you feel the same fear. Vearing off course...falling into defeat of colllege acceptances.

Now thats memorable.

You will not be just be the Editor of the School paper.

You will be the guy who fell off the bridge.

I enjoy the creativity, the flexibility and the consistent stream of new faces. Students who want tutoring are generally pretty motivated, they want to work, they want to succeed. That's a great energy to be around.

When they have their "ahh-haa moments, it's great to see the happiness. You've busted through a door, that's pretty cool to be a part of.

I went to Princeton and fought my way in, it was not a cake walk.  I know what you are going through, I had frontline training.
Unless you are an equestrian national champion, have perfect SATs, donated a building and won a Nobel prize in literature you can not count on an acceptance.

We can crack the college application code if we start with a good strategy.   The more boxes you can check off, the greater your chances.    It's that simple.   You wouldn't go into battle without a plan.

I have been tutoring for over ten years, learned how to write well in graduate school and know the system.

Review goals by all parties involved and make sure we are both a fit.

Review policies of cancellation and methods of payment

Set up schedules and expectations.

Discuss the environment in which we will work.  Ie..if you plan on sitting at the kitchen counter, that's probably not the best choice.

Emphasize that everyone is starting at their own place.  Whether you are a veteran at tutoring...or you need some help getting organized ..both are fine we will start wherever you are.

The last few minutes of each session will be reserved for review and discussion of out next goal.

And most important, at the end of the first session, discuss your level of comfort and confidence that we are a good fit.

I always try to leave the sessions on a positive note.

Children K-6.   I was a counselor/tutor for the kids who were falling behind.  My students usually had outside pressures that caused the challenges.   Some of them were emotional and some were situational.

High school, the same population but with issues more current to their ages like pressure to drink etc.   I was both tutor and counselor.

High School, work with students and college applications.

Women - I have taught women's psychology and positive psychology.  Real estate licensing.

Make a list of top candidates

Reach out to each one

Pick the one you feel most comfortable and inspired by.

I taught a class to a group of women, on Evolutionary Biology, how that helped form some of women's psychology and how positive psychology is very important in being to move ahead.

In order to get a good turn out, I offered to help people with rides if that would make things easier.   I picked up Mrs Broderick, an older woman trying to control her grandson.  She complained the entire car ride.   Her feet, her hip, the trouble with young people today ...

This was the last thing I needed, I was going to give a pretty substantial workshop and i was a bit anxious.  This made me even more so.

We got there, it all went well, I thanked them and there were polite goodbyes.  Mrs. Broderick found a ride home, as I had to stay and clean up.

I told everyone that they could call me if they would like to talk more.  One person did.  Mrs. Broderick.   She left a message which I was sure was not going be good.

She thanked me, and said the workshop had shown her just how unhappy she was, and that now she was going to make a change in her life.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
If it is one class,  think about the state of mind of the teacher and if they can give you what you need.  If not, find another source.

Your approach will be different if the teacher has time after school than if he/she is overwhelmed and has to run out to daycare and pick up the children at 3:00.

Being mindful and considerate of their needs, it is the right thing to do, and it will help you get the help.

Think through what you want to accomplish.  And be specific when possible.  "I stink at math, I think I need some extra help"  is pretty vague
Better to say...I am with struggling with this Algebra 2!  It would help me, if we could go a little slower during review period.  I can absorb things a little better.  Would that be a Ok?   And i was hoping I could come see you for a little extra help on Tuesday and Thursday during lunch break.  I'd like to get my grade up to a B+ by November.

If your issues are broader I would recommend getting some professional advice as to how to present your needs to the principal.   Every teacher is different, if you have one message from the top it is easier on everyone.

Think through the level of commitment you are willing to make and when you can flexible.

And always remember to thank them
