About Brent

I grew up in Pensacola, FL, where I began cheerleading for Washington High School. I was a UCA All-Star and CTC All-American (Universal Cheerleaders Association and Cheerleading Technique Camps). After graduation, I worked for CTC, teaching cheerleading camps all around the country, during the summer. I received a cheerleading scholarship to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. I have been coaching cheerleading and gymnastics for 20 years, in various states, including Florida, Louisiana, New Jersey, and now Tennessee. My gymnastics specialty focuses on floor, because I am a tumbling coach. I teach the correct techniques, form, and body positions required for the skills you want to learn, based on the biomechanics of the human body. Most of what you see in YouTube videos, is incorrect. For years, I have studied and coached students in the sports of power tumbling, gymnastics, and cheerleading. If you're a current gymnast, cheerleader, or you're just getting ready for the upcoming tryouts, let me know how I can assist you.

I started my cheerleading career in high school.  A few of the girls on the cheer squad, knew that I could tumble, so they talked me into trying out.  I wasn't actually expecting to make the squad, but I did, and the rest is history.  Up until that point, my tumbling background consisted of self taught handsprings, round-offs, diving boards, and neighborhood trampolines.  Once I joined the cheerleading squad, I began taking actual tumbling classes at a local gym, and I quickly realized how important it was, to have the right technique.  I began coaching pop warner cheerleading squads for local football teams, as community service work.

In college, I was introduced to A.J. Joubert, a power tumbling coach in Louisiana.  Boy, did things change at that point.  Everything I had learned, was incorrect, and it took a long time to get rid of bad habits and learn the proper techniques.

I took what I learned from A.J., and now use it to teach my students.  I have also learned quite a bit about the biomechanics of the human body, and how it relates to tumbling.  Not only do I teach my students the correct techniques, but I also explain to them how the body in motion works, and  WHY they have to do these skills a certain way.

I have 20 years of tumbling experience, mostly through gymnastics, cheerleading, and power tumbling.  I was a high school cheerleader, who received a cheerleading scholarship to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.  I have been coaching ever since.

When working with new students, typically I will introduce myself and get to know the student's background.  While the student stretches, I will ask him/her exactly what their goals are, and what skills they would like to focus on.  I will ask about their previous tumbling background, so I can have an understanding of what they may or may not already be capable of doing.

Next, I will assess the student's skill level, by having them perform a few basic tumbling skills (handstands, cartwheels, forward rolls, round-offs, and variations of each). If these skills are performed correctly, we can move on to the more advanced skills, like back handsprings, back tucks, etc.  If the basic skills are not performed correctly, we will go over them, until they have been mastered, and advance from there.  I don't teach "back yard tumbling". I teach correct technique, which allows the student to master each new skill proficiently. If the student wants to work on full twisting layouts, but does not have a correct layout, it is going to make their life difficult. You don't learn how to walk, before you learn how to crawl.  Likewise, if the student wants to learn how to perform a back handspring, but they haven't mastered a round-off or a cartwheel, they are in for a long and difficult path ahead of them.

I coach 4 year olds, up to the college level athlete.  Most of my students are either gymnasts, cheerleaders, or striving to become one.  Often times, the cheerleaders will have additional requests and would like to work on their jumps, motions, routines, and I cater to those as well.

Tumbling is about speed, strength, and the ability to keep your body in a tight, rigid position.  If you can't develop speed, and you don't have a strong core, tumbling is going to be very difficult for you.  You need to condition your core every day at home.  Push ups, lunges, squats, hollow body rocking, and hollow body holds, are all things you can do at home, with no equipment.

The total eclipse of middle Tennessee was awesome!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Do you want to learn how to tumble correctly, with proper technique, so you can master more advanced skills, like back tucks, layouts, and fulls?  Or do you just want to learn how to jump backwards, and land on your hands and feet, without any care for what it looks like, and call it a back handspring?

I'm not going to teach advanced skills, when the student isn't ready, or if the student hasn't demonstrated that they have the strength required for them.  Most gymnasts understand this.  Most cheerleaders do not.
