About Scott
I have decided to share my creative process and teach people how to make apparel and accessories (mine or theirs). I have recently put together my best home sewing studio in 30 years...I call it New Egypt and I want to share it with you! My landlord is selling my house in July, so this is a 6 month window (If you are reading this in January) to teach my intellectual property. I have been making apparel and accessories (even shoes for a few years), for 30+ years. I would like to pass on what I have learned. I am transitioning into a writer. You don't need as much equipment and materials to string words together. Take advantage of the New Egypt Experience before it is just a state of mind!
I like any profession where you can be involved in the process the entire way through. I am not saying I am not collaborative, but I get the most satisfaction from sketching an idea, drafting a pattern, sewing a prototype and then making the final finished product. It feels way better than buying something off the rack (even when it is on sale). For me, the making process is the reward. Wearing it is a close second.
I actually started teaching in Special Eductation 20+ years ago. My mother was a teacher. So was her father. I guess it is in my blood.
I went to college for Fashion Design (I have a Bachelor's Of Art in Fashion Design), I have worked in the Fashion Industry, Higher Education, Production, and Maker Spaces for over 30+ years. I learned how to make shoes during my time at CCS. I don't have everything in house to make shoes though. I am known for pants and jumpsuits and casual sportswear in general. I have a line of fashion accessories as well. I have made just about everything, but I prefer casual sportswear to formal attire. I am into Utility and Function, I call myself a "High-Function" Designer as my favorite clients are always trying to solve a problem they can't find off the rack, or they have special fit needs. I like solving either of those challenges.

I like to teach people how to walk before they run. At the College For Creative Studies I taught mostly freshman, and they would learn some basics and then try a project way beyond their skill set straight out of the gate. I like to tailor my teaching to help people shorten their learning curve to their end goal. I find most people want to make one type of garment. Once I know what they want to make, I tailor all lessons around that product and not waste their time on a shirt pattern if their main interests are pants.
College Students, people who just want to make samples, nieces, nephews, and friends.
It is important to find out if you are a designer or a maker early on. There is a difference. They can both have good ideas/designs, but it is still my opinion, that if you know how to make something, you will be a better designer. Even if you outsource your making, you will be able to communicate more effectively and knowledgeably about the product you are developing because you have actually made it before. But if you ARE a maker, you may never have to worry about that...
I just saw the Plastic Bag Store art installation by Brooklyn Based Artist Robin Frohardt at the 777 Building in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It was the most clever and best executed art installation I have ever seen in my life. It just ended on 2/5/23, you will have to go to the UK to see it next. Very inspiring to say the least.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would just be clear what you want to make so I don't waste any of your time teaching you things that don't relate to your product/garment/accessory. I took classes in all areas of apparel design in college when I knew I just wanted to make casual sportswear...My goal is to help people to narrow down their focus so they can get good in one area before expanding into others.

Not only is Scott knowledgeable about sewing, but he also has a great ability to convey his knowledge to his peers. He has a teaching style that is both engaging and effective, making sure that I always stayed focused and motivated. He would always give me helpful tips and tricks to make my projects easier and more enjoyable. His lessons were well-organized and easy to follow, and I always felt like I was making progress with each new lesson.
In addition to his technical knowledge and teaching skills, Scott also has a great personality that makes him a pleasure to work with. He is warm, friendly, and approachable, and always made me feel comfortable in his class. He has a great sense of humor, and would often make me laugh with his witty remarks and jokes.
